I lived in Portland and there's a lot going on there so I think it'd be a great location. Amy Goodman would be a great leader for the cause and Peter Coyote and the people at freespeech tv have done a lot for years on this issue. Susan Surandan and Tim Robbins would be great leaders with hi-profiles. You shouldn't bee too concerned about polarizing people because isn't this every topic the cause of that. We should not pander to our critics but go full steam ahead with the knowledge that we have "justice" on our side. We are doing the right thing and don't need to "win over" anyone our very actions will speak for themselves with positive results for our planet's future.

janflora: Great city suggestions. Has to have symbolic significance, but it should also be a city in our humble opinion. New Orleans would be a great one. We could also see Portland, OR, and Los Angeles, CA (the latter having great potential but needing a lot of help). It won't be a huge event in terms of attendance. Just the delegates and some press. Everyone else can attend virtually.

Not so much concerned about the impact of the event, though it should be as conscious as possible. We need to move past symbolic acts and take meaningful action. In the American Revolution, lives were sacrificed so that future generations could live freely and equally. In this case we don't have to sacrifice lives, but we do have to sacrifice some CO2 today...so that future generations can live in a low-carbon world.

Unfortunately, Gore is a very polarizing figure. That could be problematic.

Ideally it should be in a city which has already embraced environmental practices and can serve as a model for conventioneers. I thought of Greensburg [?], KS the town being rebuilt green by DeCaprio, but it's probably not large enough. Or New Orleans which is also seeing a lot of green rebuilding. And there is of course the issue that such a convention will have a huge environmental impact. How could that be reduced- [cut the fanfare, gift baskets, etc!]
I think it goes without saying that Senator Gore would make a great Eco-congressman. But there are many lesser-known leaders [ Julia Hill, Majora Carter, etc...]
