General Motors is requesting an additional $2.6 billion in loans to support the development of two new electric vehicles in addition to the “Volt.”
In an E-mail that Twilight Earth received this morning, GM indicated that if it receives these loans, that GM has production plans to build two more EREVs, proving they do not intend the Volt to be a one-off or niche car.
GM has previously unveiled the strikingly designed Voltec-powered Cadillac Converj which could conceivably be one of those two cars.
GM-Volt.com has been told that one or more additional Voltec concepts would unveiled in 2009. There is speculation that one could be a Buick, perhaps based on the new China-based Excelle which sits atop the same compact delta platform the Volt and Cruze use.
Even if GM has to go through a quick-rinse bankruptcy to cleave off its bad assets, the company will survive lean and mean and if all goes to plan with at least electric cars to choose from.

I’m sort of torn about GM. I feel like it’s crazy for our government to invest in a failing company. It just seems unsustainable, but my heart goes out to all the folks that work for this company.
It worries me that they already need more money. Where did the billions of dollars we just gave them go? If they want us to keep propping them up, I’d like to see some more transparency from them. Or maybe they are being open and honest about how they’re spending the bailout money, and I just don’t know where to look! Please correct me, if so! I’d like to know!
Call me a cynic…my wife does…but…
On December 3 of last year, I wrote a piece entitled “Merry Bailouts to All, and to All a Good Night.” In it, I wrote, “Meanwhile, back in Washington, we’ve got the grand gestures of auto industry executives Alan Mulally of Ford, Rick Wagoner of GM and Robert Nardelli of Chrysler saying if they’re granted a federal bailout, they’ll make hybrid and electric cars while taking a salary of $1. That’s One Dollar.”
It’s now approximately four months later and I’m just a little worried for them. How’s that $1 dollar budget working out for them? I’m thinking not so well. They must have borrowed off the first batch of billions they received to do a few renovations to the pools, re-pave their driveways, maybe a new kitchen…the usual stuff.
And now, what’s the figure GM needs…another $2.6 bil? No sweat. Write the check, drop it in the mail, knock out a couple of electric cars and let’s all cuddle around the fire whilst we make smores.
Please.
We’re struggling to stay above water and I have to read about these guys needing just a wee bit more? Like Becky, I feel for the front-line folks…the people who really make GM, Ford and Chrysler go. But the rest – I’m tired of all of them and their slot machine mentality. Keep pumping the dollar coins and sooner or later, they figure the machine will pay.
Truth about GM-America? Check out GM-China on this web! Chances for GM to sell the “Vapor-Ware” Volt? SEE:
“The astounding Chinese have epoched the great GM, of U.S.A. in producing an Electric/gas/plug-in car! They are driving them in the streets of China as we speak, they will be retailed in the U.S.A. by 2011, they will cost half the price of a “Volt” and they are “On Order” for Israel! GM, take a deep breath, your naughty parts have just been cut off by a Chinese high-tech competitor, and the “Volt” is still “Vapor-ware”!” See:http://www.cleantech.com/news/3983/chinas-byd-sells-first-mass-produced-plug-cars

Truth about the backers of the Chinese automotive adventure?
Fact of life: The American Uber-rich automotive investment capital is now moved into China on the Shanghai market board, invested in Chinese corporations – never to return to the U.S.A.
Fact of life: China has found a use for its daughters, in the factories, for 85 cents an hour, 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, rice-burning, in factory dwelling, slot toileted, factory uniformed, union free, company cafeteria fed, government rail transported to and from the boonies, unending, self-regenerating supply of cheap female Chinese peasant labor.
Fast of life: American car concerns are old, corrupt, intertwined and union bound, laced with favoritisms, old shop thinking, regional and family “inherited” jobs passed from generation to generation, keeping out new blood.
The Truth:
Every business has its “Life-Cycle” This concept is freely available and well explained in most Bus. 101 college level courses. Some of these illustrious American published tests even use GM as a case study example of an old business that has run it’s course, and is so corrupted and tarnished that it stalls and dies! According to bus 101 college texts, GM has run its course, and is at the unhappy end of it’s business “Curve” – Not so for the new, Asian enterprises! and they will out-run their aging parent companies just as a younger man is more able to out-produce and older one! GM and Chrysler are the “old men” of the American car scene, just as Mercedes, Fiat, Citroen, and VW, ever cautious in there product line-ups are the “old men” of European situation. Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, and the newer upstarts to come from China will leave little room in the marketplace for the “old men” and their stodgy old-fashioned, 1930’s sheetmetal, levers and hydraulic , over-weight, piston engined nightmares, and zip past them in diesel/Electric, plug-in hybrids very soon! The “Volt” is a nightmare marriage of very old, stodgy ideas, and “vapor-ware” to date at any rate – the only “All American” to depend on Korean batteries! The new Chinese equivalent to the Smart/Diesel/Electric plug-in is a current day reality, living and driving on the streets of Shanghai as we speak! American consumers’ inability to adapt quickly to change, and a current over-run of production, are the only reasons gas cars built in America exist today! The American Automotive Industry was sold out to off-shore interests long ago! We are now about to witness the closing of the American factories and a massive influx of imported cars, similar to all the other “Stuff” that went off-shore for cheaper wages. A fact of Life!
I don’t think dumping more of the money we don’t have into GM is a good investment at all. If you read up on all the development that’s going on, it seems that GM is being out paced by smaller emerging companies that have greater technical prowess, and less toxic baggage. I don’t want anyone to have to be out of work, but let’s face it; GM’s problems were caused by GM’s management lacking foresight, and not doing the job they’ve been well over compensated for. I admire the fresh thinking and the inspired designs taking shape outside of the traditional status quo, stuffed-shirt, universe of Detroit. I say let the sacred cows die a humane death, and let’s get on with the future.
The bottom line, too much, too little, too late!!
I think that if these have a good mileage range, and are offered at a competitive price, that this is a good idea. Environmentally friendly transportation is the way of the future.
