Spring has almost sprung, and the first day of spring, or the Spring Equinox, falls on Friday March 20th, 2009. It’s also the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
In honor of Spring, we have decided to share what I think we are all looking forward to, a world of natural life, right in our own back yards, and a cool little video of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. At Twilight Earth, we realize that just like our planet, humankind has seasons of life too, and it’s our hope that we are coming out of our Twilight Consumer season into an Environmental season of a better Green life.
Please enjoy this week’s Photo Sunday installment.
Twice a year, around March 20 or 21 and September 22 or 23, the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night are nearly equal in all parts of the world. These two days are known as the March (vernal or spring in the northern hemisphere) equinox and the September equinox. That’s the complicated way of saying, “The days are getting longer, and life is returning from her winter slumber.
“The word “equinox” derives from the Latin words meaning “equal night”
Spring been celebrated by humans since the dawn of time. It is a time of regeneration and new life. It is a time of planting harvests to reap her life in preparation of fall and winter. It is a time when animals of all kinds wake from their slumber to journey out and create new life of their own.
But as a people, we have lost touch with our natural place in the world. We no longer plant even the smallest amounts of food for our families, thereby recognizing the intrinsic relationship we have with our world. Instead, we purchase it it in plastic bags from our grocer, who had it flown in from the four corners of the planet.
We no longer spend time outdoors, learning and exploring all the real things she has to offer. Instead we sit inside our homes and watch televisions and video games which show us made up fantasy programs, convincing us that either the natural world has no value, or our time is better spent elsewhere.
Our children have become accustomed to the smell of a furnace or air-conditioner, man made things, rather than the smell of dirt and moss, leaves and flowers. We (and our children alike) have become obese, short-sighted and short-minded, caring more for our possessions than our fellow humans, and sometimes even, our own families.

But we are changing. Spring is in the air, and more and more of us are realizing that there is more to life than the square footage of our homes, cars and offices. There is a world, a planet out there, that can show us what is really important. What is really important is life itself, without all of the pretend trappings that we have convinced ourselves are real.
Spring is here. It is time for a new season. Please allow the new season that is taking place in nature to take place in your own life as well.

Hello, Spring!
Oh, I’ll be planting more than just a small amount of food for my family this spring, for the first time in years now that I actually have a yard again. So looking forward to it… and so running out of time to get ready. I hadn’t fully realized just how close spring is. Lovely photos, and thanks for the reminder!
Thank you for the comment Heather. Good luck with your garden!

‘What is really important is life itself’
great captures of springs beauties Adam.
i am about start happy-snapping at Autumn.
Adam, you remind me of a poem that I read a few years ago(what will you do when the spring comes, for it has already sprung) I am so looking forward to the beauties of spring and all it has to offer, the photos are beautiful, thank you for sharing
Oh Adam the pictures you posted are lovely.
Autumn equinox is the first bonfire of the season for my family (that is if they have lifted the total fire ban yet) and so we will spend the evening toasting marshmallows and drinking mulled-wine while “processing” those things we can’t compost or that are just too much fun to throw on the bonfire.
Our nights are decidedly chilly again now as we watch the seasons change once more. Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful post, it gladdened my heart to read it.
Lovely pictures, Adam! You know it’s odd – although I’m always looking forward to Photo Sunday, I can’t seem to grasp the concept of actually commenting on Sunday…It’s as if you have Photo Sunday and I have Commenting Tuesday. I need to work on this.
Although “Two Gentlemen of Verona” is one of my least-favorite plays in Shakespeare’s Canon, Proteus has some beautiful poetry (albeit sad, as he’s being sent away from both Verona and his love, Julia, so that he can continue his education) that fits exceptionally well with your wonderful narrative…
O, how this spring of love resembleth
The uncertain glory of an April day;
Which now shows all the beauty of the sun,
And by and by a cloud takes all away.
In Twilight Earth terms, the cloud could easily represent plastic bags, televisions and video games. The fragility of our environment often parallels the fragility of love.
CGabriel,
You don’t need to work on it. You go right ahead and have your own “comment Tuesday.” It just means that you’ll have to come back twice!
Beautiful commentary, and a fitting metaphor my friend. Thank you very much.
Great photos, I love the springtime. I miss England where the snowdrops and crocuses poke their heads up first, then the grape hyacinths, finally the daffodils and tulips. It’s so pretty.
Oh how nice to stumble upon someone who says outloud what I’ve been thinking for so long. It’s hard to enjoy the beautifies of nature in the middle of a really big city, but I do it as often as I can. Happy Spring, everyone!
