We can't discuss the now-old, but tried and true, directive "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" too often! I mention it always when talking green in person, but probably less frequently and too briefly online . . . so far. Thank you for giving it the depth and import it deserves--we should all repost your article.

So, now a new directive: "Brown is greener than green." That works for the choir; it'll be fun selling THAT to the "masses"! LOL!

Great different approach to re-thinking the whole "eco-friendly" green movement. So often we want to consider how our wasteful actions influence the Earth, but we forget to consider the stuff we already have.

I really liked this post. There is way to much hype about being green, and you could choose brown to represent what you already have, but also to represent that of the earth. I really think people ignore the color brown based on history though... I hope people don't mind me getting critical (especially of discrimination), but I think of white-washing (rather than green-washing).

Well said. I love this blog. So well written. I'm always toting the same line for so many green-neophytes. Know that with your dollar you cast a vote. Make it count. Don't fall for greenwashing, reasearch everything.
Just want to tell you about our green initiatives. I co-own Echoes in the Attic. We rescue & reclaim remnant fabrics from post-manufacturing that are earmarked for a bloated landfill near you! Designer sample fabrics from furniture manufacturers, leftovers, odd size pieces are all reinvented and reoffered so if you're going to buy a new tote, handbag, laptop or diaperbag, why not one that's a green byproduct. My son came up with our best motto ever when he was just 9 yrs. "One lady's trash is another lady's purse".
