Building a compost bin or compost heap is very basic – you don’t need much room or tons of materials, and once it’s built, the microbes do most of the work for you!
The above image is a compost bin that I built at my last house, from scavenged cedar fence stringers and chicken wire. It’s big, but one side is for a pile that’s working, and the other side is for either materials waiting to be dug in, or for me to turn the pile over into when it’s time. The only expense for me was the chicken wire (and if you have a lot of rodents or critters around, use ‘hardware cloth’ instead – it has much smaller holes).
It’s a waste to throw food and yard scraps away when you can let the wonderful world of microbes convert them into a healthy, productive soil amendment – for free! And when all of the other people on your block are going out to buy soil or compost, you can spend that money on more heirloom seeds and canning jars.
