Wilkins Ice Shelf About to Break Off and Alter the Map of Antarctica

wilkins ice shelf1 Wilkins Ice Shelf About to Break Off and Alter the Map of Antarctica

In what could irreparably change our global map, the WILKINS ICE SHELF in, Antarctica is about to collapse. Holding on by a sliver of ice, it could be the latest casualty of Global Warming.

David Vaughan, a glaciologist at the British Antarctic Survey said “We’ve come to the Wilkins Ice Shelf to see its final death throes.”

The shelf covers an area thousands of square kilometers long and juts 65 feet out of the sea off the Antarctic Peninsula and is held held together by a 500 meter wide piece of ice, at its narrowest point, down from 100 km.

“It really could go at any minute,” Vaughan said.

To date, about 25,000 sq km of ice shelves have been lost, and it is estimated that some shelves had been in place for at least 10,000 years.

The silver lining is that almost 190 nations have agreed to work out a new U.N. treaty by the end of 2009, to slow global warming and help slow the pace of excessive CO2 emissions. But perhaps the best thing that will come from this is that many Global Warming skeptics and deniers will be forced to finally accept the fact that man made global warming is real, and that it has definite repercussions on our world.

It’s a shame that it has to come to this, but perhaps this will be the wake-up call that helps us all to work on this problem together.

What are your thoughts?

Scary stuff! I have a friend who works for the British Antarctic Survey and he says that in the 12 years he’s been going to Antarctica it has changed dramatically, with ice coverage receding noticeably year after year.

Duh the climate is experiencing some warming…. something has to balance out the “global cooling” from the 50’s, doesn’t it? Not to mention the “ice age”. Global temperatures have been shifting up and down for a long, long time… why would it be any different now? Sure, pullution doesn’t help, but to prevent pollution significantly, we would have to destroy the world’s entire economy. Good idea.

I believe we are still warming up after the ice age

Janae, there was no “Global Cooling” in the 50’s, there were a few papers published in the 70’s, but there were more papers indicating warming published. The Science behind Global Cooling was that some scientists thought that increased CO2 would reflect the light before it came in. This was found to be false and that CO2 actually traps the warmth here.

In response to the medieval warming period, that data was collected from only Europe. There was a regional medieval warming period, but it was canceled out by variations in the rest of the world.

Finally, the destruction of the economy will not come around because of green technology, the more likely cause is that Oil peaks and supply can not meet demand. Oil prices will skyrocket and the entire country will be crippled. If we have a green economy not reliant on Oil we will not face this problem.

global warming is a load of crap! i’ve seen satellite photo’s of the ice caps and they indicate lot more freezing than melting! as for al gore it’s all about the money!

I’d like to know which which map’s you’ve been looking at. And who said anything about Al Gore? Have a great day Mike.

All human global warming advocates are in it for the money, from Al Gore to Dupont to Obama. This is the largest tax scam, ponzi scheme ever. Read the science and educate yourself. Why do you think huge chunks break off and float away? Because they are melting? I don’t think so.

Oh Marinaman,

I don’t even know how to respond to such blatant ignorance. Ignorance by the way is different than stupidity. Nothing wrong with being ignorant as it is just a lack of knowledge. But the sad part is when you “choose” to be ignorant by not opening you’re eyes to the truth. Welcome to the minority, because there are only a few of you guys left.

I feel sorry for you Adam because unfortunately there are more of “us guys” every day and it will take more than calling people “ignorant” to change their minds. Up until recently you could get away with that but times have change and the science is slowly turning against you. You folks will actually have to start presenting real data to back up your theory. Just showing polar bears on icebergs isn’t going to cut it anymore my friend.

A new report on climate over the world’s southernmost continent shows that temperatures during the late 20th century did not climb as had been predicted by many global climate models.

This comes soon after the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that strongly supports the conclusion that the Earth’s climate as a whole is warming, largely due to human activity.

It also follows a similar finding from last summer by the same research group that showed no increase in precipitation over Antarctica in the last 50 years. Most models predict that both precipitation and temperature will increase over Antarctica with a warming of the planet.

David Bromwich, professor of professor of atmospheric sciences in the Department of Geography, and researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University, reported on this work at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at San Francisco.

“It’s hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now,” he said. “Part of the reason is that there is a lot of variability there. It’s very hard in these polar latitudes to demonstrate a global warming signal. This is in marked contrast to the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula that is one of the most rapidly warming parts of the Earth.”

Insults against opposing views are a hallmark of AGW and indeed Liberal positions. You choose not to argue facts. Just as Al Gore refuses to debate his position. “Skeptics” are typically willing to admit the science is not settled, which it is not. What we don’t know is much greater than what we do. Proclamations of “the science is settled” is made by snake oil salesmen.

No insults. I am ignorant to a great many things. Rocket Science and Brain Surgery are two of them. You come across as if you are ignorant to climate change, global warming, resource allocation, protection of species through protection of the environment and a great many other things.

You mention the IPCC, so I don’t need to tell you where the resources are for you to find the facts. You quoted one scientist who doesn’t agree with climate change modeling, but you don’t bring up the thousands that do, nor do you mention the fact that the U.N. is backing climate change science. Nor do you mention recent studies on ocean acidification in reference to the carbon sink.

We could go back and forth on this all day, but you are settled and vested in a high carbon lifestyle simply through your affiliation with Cherry Creek.

Thanks for the comments.

I am a sailor. Very low carbon output there. I believe in global warming and I don’t believe we completely understand why climate change occurs, but we have a good idea. Human caused Co2 has little if anything to do with it. I have no faith what-so-ever in the UN or the Governmental IPCC. The fact you do tells me loads about you state of ignorance. I know you are very concerned about acidification and coral. Let me put your mind at ease. Coral developed in an enviornment of much higher CO2 than exists today.

Among those capital market participants was former U.S. Vice President AI Gore. Gore had a long-standing interest in environmental issues and had represented the U.S. in Kyoto. He also had equally long-standing family ties with the energy industry through his father’s friendship with Armand Hammer and his financial interest in Hammer’s company Occidental Petroleum, which the son inherited. In 2004, as Goldman Sachs was gearing up its climate-change market-making initiatives in quest of green profits, Gore teamed up with Goldman Sachs executives David Blood, Peter Harris, and Mark Ferguson to establish the London-based environment investment firm Generation Investment Management (GIM), with Gore and Blood at its helm. In May, 2005 Gore, representing GIM, addressed the Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk and emphasized the need for investors to think in the long term and to integrate environmental issues into their equity analyses. “I believe that integrating the issues relating to climate change into your analysis of what stocks are worth investing in, how much, and for how long, is simply good business,” Gore explained to the assembled investors. Applauding a decision to move in this direction announced the day before by General Electric’s CEO Jeff Immelt, Gore declared that “we are here at an extraordinarily hopeful moment. . .when the leaders in the business sector begin to make their moves.” By that time Gore was already at work on his book about global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, and that same spring he began preparations to make a film about it.

Marinaman,

The way our comments are set up, under the plug in that we use for Thesis (which is the templet that this site runs on) all comments are moderated. We do this because, if we did not, we would get over 100 spam comments a day that would fill the comment program.

I assure you that everything that is a real comment in reference to a real article, is approved. Regardless of whether I believe or agree with what the commenter says. (Unless the comment is unduly inflammatory or verbally abusive.) Calling me a coward because I moderate comments does not however constitute any of the previous conditions of posting. Though it is close.

Thanks “again” for your comments. However, this is not your bully pulpit. We don’t agree and we probably never will.

Adam,
I think more people are becoming skeptical of AGW because the science of climate has been hijacked by politics. Too often limited climate data is used by AGW proponents to make absurd statements like – the reason Tiger Woods lost the US Open was because of the stormy weather caused by global warming. And I’m not making this up, that was actually stated. That is loony and it just elevates everyones skepticism. I can’t respect anyone who would support such a stupid comment. Is the scientific data for AGW so weak that you have to make claims like that?

Adam equates the Wilkens ice shelf to Antarctica (which is not warming), which he then equates to global warming and then blames man. He says nothing about ocean currents or volcanic activity. The Antarctic Penninsula should be considered a completely different climatic zone. Giant, and I mean giant, blocks of ice breaking off prove nothing. But my blatant ignorance may be showing yet again.

boy i just mention al gore and looked what happened!!!!!!!!!!
by the way for every scientist that embraces global warming there is one that does not and the political hacks and the ever so not relevant U.N. try their best to discredit them but the growing legion of people the see through this sham support these scientist that know that share our views! the wilkens shelf isw 93 mil.longx68mi.wide a very small dot on antartica and what the alarmist won’t tell us is the eastern part especially along with the rest of antartica is gaining in ice growth. i live in the Idaho panhandle CDA area which had record snow fall this last winter plus other parts of the U.S.A had snow fall for the first time ever!!!!!!!!! sorry big al you loose! don’t go away mad just go away!

AUSTRALIA’S Minister for Climate Change, Penny Wong, recently suggested that most of the global warming since 1960, about 85 percent, has happened in the oceans and that change in ocean heat content is thus the most appropriate measure of global warming.

But, calculating from first principles, according to this data the oceans have absorbed far less energy than the IPCC estimates for the impact of rising carbon dioxide levels. While the government data suggests a warming rate of 0.38 watts/ m2 the IPCC data suggests a warming rate of 3.6 watts/ m2 . This is a significant discrepancy of nearly 10:1 and needs to be resolved. If the oceans really are the major heat sink for the planet where is the rest of the energy going? Alternatively, is the error in the IPCC estimates.

Here is your IPCC heat sink, Adam.

Why then are the oceans in some spots turning into carbonic acid the killer whale is theartened by this type of acidity. The oceans are heating up causing more damaging hurricans and tornadoes, the oceans temperature is 1.6 degrees above normal. Quit sticking up for the human race it’s a discrace, it is unable to see the writing on the wall it only see’s $$$$$$. FOOLS!

You burn oil and fossil fuels you cause a greenhouse effect, you cut down the rainforests which cool the earth you start a melting of the poles. The rainforests are done because of greed, mankind is a fool and as far as changing he sure is dragging is feet. Skeptics are the the biggest fools of all they must work for the oil companies, Mankinds time is running out and he has no one to blame but himself

It is very unfortunate that science is being used for political purposes. Global warming is an imaginary product used for promoting the atomic power industry. When the truth will eventually become apparent, the credibility of science will be seriously damaged, since so many scientists (not only climatologists, but also many scientists in general) blindly trusted the IPCC and accused their opponents as “skeptics” and “deniers”, etc.
