The Japanese satellite will measure carbon dioxide and methane from 56,000 locations on the earths surface, compared to just 282 land-based observation sites as of last October.
The satellite is called “Ibuki” or “vitality” in Japanese, and is the first of its kind.
Yasushi Tadami, deputy director of research and information at the Environment Ministry’s global environment bureau said “It will contribute to raising certainties in IPCC research that greenhouse gases are increasing and will also advance research on the mechanism of carbon cycles.”
There is news that NASA is putting together it’s own Orbiting Carbon Observatory to be launched this year, and if this is a “Green Space Race,” then I’m all for it.
There is a growing tendency for climate change and global warming skeptics and deniers to refute the findings of scientists the world over, so any new technologies that can be used to further prove the fact that Global Warming is real and that it is being caused by humans, is worth the endeavor.
However, there are still people out there who think that the moon landing was faced and that the world is flat. But because some people are still not convinced, I say “keep bringing on the science!”
What do you say?

I’m sort of torn! It’s definitely important to get the science to a place where deniers are left without a case against warming. We need as many folks as possible on board to get where we need to be.
On the other hand….how much is all of this costing? What would that money do if we applied it to revamping the power grid and replacing some coal-fired plants with sustainable energy?
Becky, you make a good point. But how can we revamp the power grid to accept more solar and wind power, while replacing coal-fired plants, without people believing in the science of man made climate change?
Hmmm, it only it were easy, yeah?
Thanks for the comment, making me think.
Yea, you make a good counterpoint! I guess it’s like my husband’s mom says: nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
Adam, I agree there are so many people who deny global warming exists. Irrefutable proof might shut down the so called “debate.” You’d think there would be enough science already to convince everyone, but apparently skulls can be quite thick!
What about the temperature decline for the last 10 years? It is definitely not a linear model CO2 vs Temp?
What about the reduced sunspots over the last 10 years with the reduced solar winds and increased cosmic ray incidence?
Oh boy, here we go.
Global Climate Chaos,
What about them? I could give you a “what about…” pages long.
Your argument is like saying “There is no such thing as rain, because I just stuck my head out the window and it aint raining.”
You’ve got a global warming denier website. From it “I mistrust politicians and political scientists. Show me the facts, not your dry lab data, not your model data, but the real data.” What is lab data and model data if not real?
@Global Climate Chaos: the trend for the last 10 years has been only very slightly upward, and not cooling (depending upon the measures, but I use the sceptic source of UAH), however 10 years is too small a time period, mostly because of the major climate cycles including SOI, PDO and the solar cycle. These were in a warming phase in 1998 and are now in a cooling phase in 2008; the influence of carbon dioxide over that period would be drowned out by these cycles that give about 0.50C swings in global temps, where as the CO2 is relatively consistently increasing and should have caused about 0.15C warming over the 10 years. As the solar cycle swings around in 2012-2014 we’ll have a better picture of things to come.
Note that the IPCC climate models do take into account these cycles, including the solar cycle, which is you solar winds and sunspot. However the cosmic rays causing cloud cover is still very controversial, the latest research showing that there is most likely no or insignificant contribution; I am sure this will be cleared up as the cosmic ray hypothesis is further tested.
As for the debate, nearly all climate scientists agree that humans have caused greenhouse gas changes on the climate. The public and political perception is that there is more disagreement in the scientific community. Frankly, there will always be disagreement in the scientific community. What is truly wrong is the non-scientists (public policy / think tanks) producing deliberately deceptive information based on part truths to imply things that should never be concluded.
Climatologists agree on global warming

Neoporcupine,
Very well said. You’ve got a wealth of information on your site too, and it looks like you’ve been putting good stuff out since 2004. Keep up the good fight!
Adam
It would be a shame to use funds to collect data merely to convince naysayers. However, I’m sure we’ll need these satellites to measure and document the progress we will make anyway. As for skeptics, I suspect no amount of genuine data will be sufficient – sad. The rest of us know we must press on with determination and confidence.
