How to Talk to a Global Warming Skeptic

global warming skeptics How to Talk to a Global Warming Skeptic

Excellent article put out by Grist.org in reference to how to talk to a Climate Skeptic.

If you’re reading this article, chances are that you either believe that Global Warming is real and is caused by human beings, or you’re from the other camp and you’re doing research and trying to figure out how to debunk the science.  Either way, part of of the solution to Global Warming and stopping the downward slide of the Environment in general, is being able to articulate the facts.

We all know that those who stand to either ease their environmental guilt, or make money from the harvest of the earths resources and pollution that result, whitewash the subjects by using the same old party line “Global Warming is Cyclical” or “It’s going to be colder this winter than last winter.”

The subjects below are real, scientific, agreed upon and accepted truths that deal with many of the skeptics arguments.

Stages of Denial

  1. There’s nothing happening
    1. Inadequate evidence

    2. Contradictory evidence
    3. No consensus
  2. We don’t know why it’s happening
    1. Models don’t work
    2. Prediction is impossible
    3. We can’t be sure
  3. Climate change is natural
    1. It happened before
    2. It’s part of a natural change
    3. It’s not caused by CO2
  4. Climate change is not bad
    1. The effects are good
    2. The effects are minor
    3. Change is normal
  5. Climate change can’t be stopped
    1. Too late
    2. It’s someone else’s problem
    3. Economically infeasible

Scientific Topics

  1. Temperature
  2. Atmosphere

What It Really Takes To Make Environmental Change | Twilight Earth

You know, there is one thing missing from all of that.
Fact. Scientific equations.
The same thing missing from every single argument for CO2 causing global warming.

First off, I’d like to point out that quite a couple of your articles conflict with each other. Articles that state that isolated examples don’t necessarily disprove it, but then they give references to isolated examples to prove it. Silly.

Look, I’m no moron, I have a very reasonable request. There is one thing I need, I need real, scientifically reason why CO2 is the monster. That’s it. And nobody will give it. Nobody. And you seem to have a lot of information, so maybe you’ll give it to me? Equations, direct mathematical proof of it. This is it, and this is the real way to deal with a global warming skeptic. That’s all. You don’t need all that trash arguments (listen, different sources give different evidence, if you don’t refute their evidence and just claim yours is right–then you’ve done nothing).

I doubt you’ll grant me this though. I doubt, simply because others have granted me proof against it… here:
http://www.junkscience.com/Greenhouse/

I love the environment, and I want to do a lot for it. But fighting CO2 isn’t the way. I’m ticked off at the severe uncountable articles that state global warming is pretty much, causing everything. I know the difference between global warming and things like overfishing. I know deforestation of rain forests is far larger a problem. Basically, my whole argument sums up to this post I made:

I await your reply.

GMNightmare,

Thank you for your comment. If you know anything about us here at Twilight Earth, you should know that what we write about, we believe in. We write with integrity, so I take comments and questions for clarification seriously.

The information in the article that you commented on has a wealth of information, and will answer “scientifically” why CO2 is “The Monster” as you put it.

But sometimes, too much information is just that. So in an attempt to pinpoint some information for you, you might want to start with http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2006/12/22/224450/84

As you know, books and libraries can (and have) been written on the subject. I apologize if you feel that the articles on this site don’t give you the conclusive proof that you are looking for. I’m not a scientist or climate engineer by trade, but with that being said, I think we do a good job of offering conclusive facts to a wide variety of environmental issues.

Thank you for your comment.

Adam

I did indeed take a good look at that, in fact, I read a lot of all your articles.

But the article you pointed out, didn’t prove the monster was CO2. Predicting an increase is meaningless. I can predict and make large claims too. What if, I at the time, predicted an increase of temperature because of plastic trash? I then should also then have my claim immediately attributed to the cause of global warming by that standard. Predictions, mean nothing, unless you have proof of correlation.

And there again, is what is missing. Correlation. Okay, we have global warming. I can say sure, perhaps we’ve increased in temperature. What I’m saying though, is that CO2 isn’t the cause. That our other incredibly bad and disastrous habits are the ones really to blame.

I want direct, irrefutable evidence of correlation. Not graphs saying oh, CO2 increased and temperature increased! It MUST BE TRUE! Nay, because deforestation has also increased, human population has increased, destruction of habitat for living space has drastically increased, specie devastation has drastically increased.

Here’s the quote: “based on well-established laws of physics”. What are those? What are those? That’s what I want. That’s what nobody ever says. That’s what has never, ever, been given.

Oh, and please, with the first link I gave above, if you find a valid argument against those equations I would be equally pleased as well. That is the strongest, most firm evidence I have against CO2 global warming. That is the strongest, everybody has, against CO2 global warming.

It’s important here to understand what I’m saying. We both say there is a problem. There is. What is different here is the cause and therefore the solution.

For a long time the governments around the world denied global warming. Then one day they swung their opinion the other way. My theory is “the penny dropped”, so that now they have an excuse to tax people for the air we breath.

Seriously though, GMNightmare has a very valid point, no one has proven beyond a doubt that humans have caused global warming. Whenever someone goes on TV to prove global warming is a scam, everyone goes out of their way to slander the person, taking the focus off the facts.
Maybe you should do a search on NASA’s web site for the facts. It’s buried in there quite deeply, but they show that the whole solar system was going through a warm up cycle over the past few years.
