Cultivate Some Green Life with a Homemade Algae Photobioreactor

biofuelarray350 Cultivate Some Green Life with a Homemade Algae Photobioreactor

The alternative energy industry is all a-buzz with the latest biofuel possibility: algae.

Biofuels from algae seem to be the next truly green fuel in terms of efficiency, yield, and environmental footprint.

And now you can grow your own.

Algae grow rapidly and efficiently, doubling their mass several times daily, and producing up to 60% of their biomass in the form of oil. That oil is capable of being extracted and made into biodiesel, and the rest of the algae mass’ carbohydrate content can then be fermented into fuels such as bioethanol and biobutanol.

In terms of quantity, algae can produce at least 15 times more oil per acre than alternative sources such as soybeans, rapeseed, jatropha, or palms. According to the biofuel company SOLIX, algae can produce more oil in an area the size of a two-car garage than an football field of soybeans.

Building a homemade algae photobioreactor isn’t nearly as complex as it sounds. Jared Bouck, of AlgaeGeek, has posted his easy-to-follow instructions for projects as simple as very basic reactor, on up to a modular reactor array capable of being scaled up to production level. He builds them strictly out of his own interest, freely sharing his knowledge for the DIY green technology crowd.

His very first project, a basic reactor, would make an excellent science project for kids (or for teachers to have in the classrooom). The components cost him less than $12 and were easily found, being basic aquarium parts and other off-the-shelf pieces. While mainly useful for demonstration or keeping cultures alive for a bigger project, this basic version could be a great way to show your support for algal biofuels.

The next step up from that was a simple photobioreactor (PBR) array, seen in the video below:

After that, he built version 2, as seen in the photo at the top of the article, which is capable of being scaled up due to its modular design. The three tube array cost him about $100 in materials and 4 hours of time to put together, and was built with intention of it being an outdoor unit capable of prolonged use. He says that it also is much easier to fill and harvest from than the first version.

His latest model is the indoor year-round model that runs on a minimum of electricity and could possibly do double duty as an end table…

Small panic – when I first saw the picture I thought it was going to be something to drink and I thought, “I don’t think I’ll ever be that green.” Glad I don’t have to go there.

If my kids’ school ever brought back the science fair (stupid budget cuts), my nine year old would love to do this. Anything that looks gross is a big hit with him.

Thank you for this great article.
I am always interested about alternative energy, but it’s the first time i heard about algae. Thank you again.

Great article! I love the idea that we could all be pootling about fuelled by home-grown green slime! That could give the oil giants something to chew on.

Hello Adam, I received an email from this gentlemen and a link to his site. I took a look at it and I passed on doing a post for Chemically Green at this time. The site is pretty, sounds interesting, but seems a little short on information. Let’s see some verified scientific evidence to what is actually going on with his process and CG will be glad to work with him. I am from Missouri and I would want to see scientific data and then jump on the band wagon.
Special wishes for a great 2009.

Adam, I am not trying to dampen the parade, but all I see is a lot of pictures and no data. Please understand where I am coming from. Need some hard data.

Steven -

Here’s a great link for another prototype:

The SOLIX link above has more information as well.

This may be an alternative to foreign oil, and the ethanol dream that spikes food prices, but how are carbon emissions addressed?

Hey Adam,
A couple of friends and myself want to explore the possibility of making it larger than u have…we plan to make use of containers that are capable of holding over 500 gallons each and producing bio-diesel on a small scale as a proof of concept so that our community can apply it on a production scale. We have the funds and everything, but i’d love to know the major bumps you hit on the way, and also how far did u get. Were u able to produce any fuel as such?
Thanks,
Love your design.

I own about 80 440 gallon containers made from Cross-linked polyethylene. Let me know if you are interested.

it’s interesting and based on advanced technology but not enough as a knowledge.i want make model for science fair based on algal bio fuel. Can send me more about his first basic reactor.
ooom! interesting !!!!!!
