Coleman Natural Beef is recalling over 1 million lbs of its beef, most of it having gone to California Whole Foods stores.

Lets put this into perspective.  That’s 100 pounds time 10,000, or about four million hamburgers.

Don’t get me wrong.  I like Coleman Natural Beef’s business model.  Said of Coleman’s cows, “His cows are not given antibiotics and growth hormones like the big producers’ cattle are, and he feeds them a vegetarian diet.”

But let’s take a look at what “Natural” means in a world of large scale beef manufacture. If you think that Mr. Coleman wakes in the morning to look out the kitchen window of his ranch to see how his cows are doing, your wrong.  Coleman gets his beef from over 700 independent ranchers. The Company is owned by an investment company and Mr. Coleman sits on the board.

Natural” beef is not Organic and as Mr. Coleman likes to say “Were just one grain away from being Organic.” The term “Natural” is just one more term in the “labeling wars.”

So even if its not Organic, how could Natural beef end up with E.Coli?  E.Coli is a bacterium that isrecall 300x225 Coleman Natural Beef recalls 1 Million Pounds of Hamburger commonly found in the lower intestines of warm blooded animals.  So how does food become infected? consumption of any food or beverage that becomes contaminated by animal (especially cattle) manure can result in contracting the disease.  In other words, it’s during the slaughter process that the beef comes into contact with the feces and the beef then becomes a “Food born pathogen.”  Crops sprayed with the manure of infected beef can also become infected and this is how the recent spinach, tomato and pepper outbreaks occurred.

Now I’m not saying that Coleman Natural Beef is a bad company.  If you are going to eat mass produced and slaughtered beef, they are one of the best companies to purchase from.  But in a world where cows are called beef and slaughter houses are called precessing plants, you have to weigh you’re risks when you visit the grocery store.

The fix?  We all have three alternatives.

  1. Keep shopping for you’re beef at the grocery store.
  2. Buy you’re beef at the farmers market where you know that Mr. Cow was not shot full of Antibiotics and force fed corn and when he did die, it wasn’t on a factory floor.
  3. Become a Vegetarian.

I choose option #2. Though sometimes I’m weak and don’t follow my own advise.

Alter the Eco and keep up the good fight,

Adam

Very interesting article, thank you for posting it. One small thing- Its “your”, not, “you’re” .
I am no longer eating burgers based on this and other similar news articles.

Hello Adam,

Because of all the growth hormones & cruel way these animals die, my family & I no longer eat beef. We rarely do & when we do I try to be very cautious. We mainly eat chicken & turkey meat.
Thanks for this article, it just reinforces our decision not to eat meat!

You’re very welcome. If you havent seen it yet, you should also check out the documentary “Food Inc.” Very good. Thanks for your comment, and your commitment!

Adam,
My family and I have recently seen ‘FOOD, Inc” and it has completely changed the way we eat. We had been on the fence about beef, pork and chicken for a long time but this documentary was the proof we needed to fuel our conviction for good. I recently wrote to our local Shaw’s market and asked them about the meat and poultry products they sell. I asked questions about grass fed cattle, humane slaughtering practices (as if there really is such a thing when you think about it :/ ), antibiotics and hormones. I just received an email today citing Coleman Natural Beef as one of the beef products they carry. They pointed out the “forty-step animal wellness program that will build the natural immunities of the cattle so they stay healthy and can fight disease naturally” which Coleman promotes. So I googled Coleman beef. The first result was the Coleman website, then however, in the number two spot was your article. Things that make you go, “HMMM?!?!”. We are in a tough spot, we cannot afford not to eat contaminated or poorly collected/ raised/ slaughtered meats and poultry. We are a family of 6 on an income under $21,000 a year. We visited a local organic farm recently after not having beef for two months. We bought 2 pounds of ground beef for a whopping $14. As you can imagine, this is not an endeavor we can embark on often, though I wish we could. My husband and I have 4 growing boys. We are really at a loss of how to make a real impact if we cannot afford to. We have about had all the pasta and pizza we can eat but we just cannot eat the beef sold in so many stores with a clear conscience. Even the ‘Wild Harvest’ beef is still vegetarian fed…. that is not grass fed and as ‘FOOD, Inc’ will tell you, that is a no-no, especially in the world of e-coli. Thank you for this article.

PS the Shaw’s people also told me that Coleman beef is free grazing on grass for 12-15 months, yet Coleman’s own site says they are pure vegetarian fed. :/

Thank you for your comment. Even I, after having read Omnivores Dilemma and watching Food Inc. (And doing a lot of research and writing on the subject) have not gone completely vegetarian. I still eat a little meat, but not often. I (my personal opinion) think that we are born to eat meat. But I’ve learned a few things. Beans and lentils make for an excellent meat substitute, and I’ve learned to do things with black beans and chick peas that I never knew you could do. Black bean tacos, split pea soups, tai sauce… excellent and ALOT cheaper than meat.

I also treat myself to venison once in a while. We have a local butcher that carries it during hunting season. I’m completley guilt free about eating it too, as it was raised in nature, is good for you and helps control the deer population.

I have a friend who has been Vegan for 10 years, has a handful of kids and is budget conscious also. There are ways to be as healthy on a smaller food budget than most.

Thanks for the comment and for stopping by,

Adam
