black friday Boycott Black Friday and Celebrate Buy Nothing Day Nov 28th, 2008

Why should we boycott Black Friday and celebrate Buy Nothing Day on Nov. 28th, 2008? The Black Friday ads have already started running and consumers adrenaline is running high in anticipation of having an excuse to spend.

Suddenly, we ran out of money and, to avoid collapse, we quickly pumped liquidity back into the system. But behind our financial crisis a much more ominous crisis looms: we are running out of nature… fish, forests, fresh water, minerals, soil. What are we going to do when supplies of these vital resources run low?

There’s only one way to avoid the collapse of this human experiment of ours on Planet Earth: we have to consume less.

It will take a massive mind-shift. You can start the ball rolling by buying nothing on November 28th. Then celebrate Christmas differently this year, and make a New Year’s resolution to change your lifestyle in 2009.

It’s not just about saving the planet though. It’s about returning to relationships that aren’t based on material gratification.

As always, Keep up the good fight and Alter the Eco!

I’m onboard with that! There’s too much football on that day, to waste it fighting the throngs of consumption-junkies. In a high sales-tax state, like California, there’s just no reason not to do major shopping online. Throw-in free shipping on orders over $50 (pretty common, these days) and I’m almost making money.

I asked and received. During the Holidays my family aren’t even going to buy gifts. We are going to pool our money and rent a cabin in the mountains. We will make handmade presents for each other and spend more time with each other. Presents fade, moments do not.

James,

You just made my day. I have faith in humanity once again (at least for the time being) Great for you! I’m excited for you, and wish I were in your shoes!

Thanks for stopping in, and please come back again!

I wish people can be less materialistic and more practical, but this isn’t the case with every body. Women, should be ban from planet earth coz they cause more waist disposal then anyone else.

1. They cause men to throw up, which causes more pollution on our planet.
2. They shop 100 times more than men so obviously more plastic bags and more pollutants.
3. They make everything XL so we can throw away access food..

Women should change before anyone else..

Shahzaib,

Interesting. Perhaps other people we should ban from this planet are
1. People who comment for no particular reason all.
2. People to lazy to use the word “because”.
3. People who use terms like “people should be ban”
and
4. People who disrespect a whole group based on their sex.

Without women, you wouldn’t be here to talk smack about women, my friend.

Awoman to that, Adam! hee hee.
But, I digress. I’m writing a post on this very topic and I’ve come across a bit of news that is, to me as a lesbian, a bit distressing. It seems that a group calling themselves the “The American Family Association” is calling for a boycott of Walmart on Black Friday based on their belief that the company is gay friendly. There is an article at http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53041. It really bothers me to think that Walmart may mix up this boycott that seems to have been created to use statistics from the regular Black Friday Boycott to bump their agenda of hate. Grrrr….

Thorne,

I read your article. Its good and I agree with all of it. (except for the Walmart part) That’s o.k., even Greens don’t agree on everything.

The “American Family Association” is a Neo Con organizatation that is more about control and repression of individual freedoms, than they are about religion. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a christian, but I’m not a right wing or ultra conservative christian.

Your header on your website says it all. “ethical and moral principles are governed by examining whether a certain action, whether connected to body or speech is likely to be harmful to one’s self or to others and thereby avoiding any actions which are likely to be harmful”

Christ was not about control, he was about choice and individual decision.

I’ll be eating turkey today and writing myself. Good luck on your NoNaMo project! Whats your Word count?

So is this a Muslim owned company? Is this their little jihad to help damage the American Economy by boycott?

Don’t people know that if you want to improve the economy, it requires people to buy stuff? If you don’t buy the economy gets worse. So is this Jihad or what?

Susan, do you know what the word Jihad means? Or is it something that you throw around with the words like “Tea Bag” and “Czar?” If the economy is driven by consumer spending, perchance you can explain to all of us, the cause of this last economic crash? Was it a result of to many people not buying houses, cars and cheap Walmart goods? Hmmm…. go figure.

People not buying as much is merely something making the recession last longer. Equally important for our economy is people throwing things away. Companies in this free-market have to continue to grow to be successful. That means we have to keep buying more and constantly throw things away. It makes me sick actually. Even our electronics are made to break so we buy new stuff. The last TV I purchased broke and could not be serviced. I made sure the one I replaced it with could be serviced. It’s something small, but multiply it by 100 million and it makes a difference in the amount of waste we create.

I agree with Susan. The #1 issue in this country (United States) is the economy. And the economy moves when people buy things. If you choose to boycott buying then you choose to support the economic failure of the country. Just like the Muslim Radical Elements do. They want to see the US fall, so do the Russians for that matter. So if you are interested in damaging this country, then by all means, boycott. Then you have only yourself to blame when your own job disappears.

Susan and Edgar, buying ’stuff’ is a temporary fix. Most of this stuff is made in China, or abroad, and does not support American industry. My family buys things…we buy good food that we haven’t grown, organic food when possible from local farmers. We buy good furniture of real wood, again locally produced. We buy sheets, blankets and towels of natural materials, local when we can. Sometimes I make things from fabric I buy locally, and sometimes we buy from NearSeaNaturals. This stuff is more expensive than trash from Walmart, but I can promise you, it never winds up in a landfill. It doesn’t smell weird, either, and our house has few allergens in it. We all have to buy things, its just that we have huge choices about what we buy and who we can support. I’m for supporting Americans, AND the planet. Are you?
