Burger King says Global Warming is Baloney

bk sign 321x500 Burger King says Global Warming is Baloney

Taking its “Flame Broiled” concept to new heights, two Memphis Burger King locations read: “Global Warming is Baloney.”

Chris Davis From the Memphis Flyer, spoke to a female BK employee who didn’t identify herself.

Chris: Hi, I’m calling from the Flyer about your sign. Does Burger King really think global warming is baloney?
BK: [Hangup]
Me :( calling back): Your sign out front says global warming is baloney.
BK: I don’t see that sir.
Chris: Well it does.
BK: I don’t see that sir… I change the signs and that sign’s been up for a week.
Chris:Well, I have pictures that I took this afternoon [cross conversation ensuring I'm calling the correct BK. I am]
Chris:So there’s no question that your sign said it and so did one in Midtown. I want to know if it was on purpose or if it was a prank someone pulled on you.
BK: Let me get the manager. [several minutes of dead air then the same or very similar voice picks up.]
BK: Who were you holding for?
Chris: A manager, about the sign. I have pictures of the sign and people have called me upset. I just want to know if it’s a mistake or not so I can report it. [rehash of previous conversation]
BK: Let me go outside and look at the sign and I’ll call you right back. [exchange of contact info]

[phone rings, I answer]
BK: The sign was put up yesterday.
Chris: And it’s not a mistake?
BK: No.
Chris: It reflects the opinion of BK international?
BK: Yes. Would you like to talk to the home office? I can give you a number.
Me: I’ve got the number, I’ve already contacted them. Thanks.

Chris also goes on to say that “When it comes to climate change, BK doesn’t have the best reputation. Climatecounts.org, a not-for-profit organization that rates companies based on attitudes toward global warming, describes Burger King as “A choice to avoid for the climate-conscious shopper.”

Update:

We contacted Burger King and their official response, sent to us in an E-mail, is as follows:

This statement on the reader board does not reflect a Burger King Corp. (BKC) opinion or view. The restaurants where these signs appeared are independently owned and operated and were not authorized to display this statement. The signs have since been removed.

BKC believes in operating as a socially responsible company and is committed to making a positive impact in the communities where it lives and works.

As an aside, this is the same response that others members of the media and press have received.

We hope that the overwhelming attention that this article and others like it, have received, is an indicator to Corporations across America that we the people, take our planet seriously.

Wow truly foolish…Petition Project anyone? I remember this place that was called America where people could make up their own minds and not have opinions forced on them…what happened?

HA! Agreed! Global Warming is baloney… but not Burger King’s global contribution of pollution though. Our Earth has gone through worst climate changes in the past and no doubt in the future, but what is occurring now has little to nothing in regards to humans creating a global warming… it’s a natural occurrence and government brick-heads like Al “Needs To Be” Gore is using it as a marketing tool to gain riches only. Self-research people! Use it often.

What happened? Generation X happened and now they’re all screwing us because of their rebellious ways… yeap!

If one truly believes that we allow people to make up their own minds in this place called America then it would be OK if the guys at BK decided to post a sign saying that Global Warming is Baloney. Freedom of speech and beliefs goes both ways. Watch where you tread.

Hmmm, it appears you screen the blog comments. It’ll be interesting to see if you post my prior comment. If you’re reading this and don’t see something from me earlier it means that Adam only supports free speech if it supports what he believes in. Which is hypocritical and UnAmerican. Even if no one reads this other than Adam.

Of course, BK would say Global Warming is Balony

What exactly is the free speech issue here? The owner (presumably) made a public comment. Members of the public responded with critique. Is the public not allowed to respond to idiot comments now?

If you read and comprehend what was written there is no free speech issue. Kudos to Adam for allowing comments from both sides of view on the topic. Not all green blogs do so.

Stryker,

We screen comments for spam and outrageous language, that’s it. You’re always welcome to post your opinion on this site. (As long as it’s respectful) I was in the service way to long not respect freedom of speech)

I’m not offended by your comment at all.

I do watch where I tread. Every single day, and if you knew me at all, you would know that integrity is my watchword. That’s why we welcome dissenting points of view. This is how we communicate. This is how we learn. This how we convince or agree to disagree. This is what debate (and this website) are all about.

Thanks for the comment,

YES ideed! BK is CORRECT. Global warming is a load of crap! Started by the likes of Al Gore and his libby lefty libs (like GE corp) who have nothing to lose and all kinds of greedy PROFITS TO GAIN as long as they get their blind followers to believe the stuff!
FYI: 25 years ago, the world was supposedly getting colder with an ice age effect fast approacing. THAT AMOUNTED TO NOTHING…JUST LIKE GLOBAL WARMING WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING. WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

ha! disagreed! after WWII people also thought that it was impossible to over fish the ocean buy many ecosystems in the Indian ocean, sea of japan, and east+south china seas were devastated. Be mindful of what humans are capable. yes the earth’s climate changes naturally, but not this fast and humans have only been around a second in earth’s eyes so we have never lived during these changes and are therefore not immune to them. also for the note who would gain more benefit more? Al Gore from publicity or all the companies that would lose money if there were more restrictions and less demand for things such as cars+petrol? companies that are already established don’t want to change their ways or give rise to a new lifestyle because it will cost them large profits. the reality is that people who actually work to understand things(scientists) support global warming and people who own stock/ or companies don’t know shit but don’t want to lose money strive to denounce a scientifically proven phenomena. i know you all love your suv’s and change is hard but you right winged a-holes (not all of you, but fair generalization) should stop lying to yourselves, and never patronize another on education and sound ignorant at the same time. Thanks to those who read my rant, hopefully we can all stop taking sides and see the issue for what it is.

Baseless assertions are not evidence.

Started by the likes of Al Gore and his libby lefty libs (like GE corp) who have nothing to lose and all kinds of greedy PROFITS TO GAIN as long as they get their blind followers to believe the stuff!

Evidence? When I ask for evidence, I mean primary documentation that the geophysicists of the world and Al Gore are involved in a scheme to defraud the public and little old of Exxon-Mobile. Do you have that evidence or can I expect more bluster?

Also, has anyone mentioned to you that the science of Global Warming goes back well over a century? Svante Arrenhius back in the 19th century first proposed the idea that humans could inadvertently heat up the environment.

FYI: 25 years ago, the world was supposedly getting colder with an ice age effect fast approacing. THAT AMOUNTED TO NOTHING…JUST LIKE GLOBAL WARMING WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING. WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

No, you are simply repeating fossil fuel industry talking points. This claim has been so tirelessly repeated by Deniers that it has been the subject of a *peer reviewed study. The study went and looked at the climate science of the mid 60’s and the entire 70’s and found that of the 71 papers that dealt with subject:

The survey identified only 7 articles indicating cooling compared to 44 indicating warming. Those seven cooling articles garnered just 12% of the
citations. Graphical representations of this survey are
shown in Fig. 1 for the number of articles and Fig. 2
for the number of citations.

Got that? Now that you know you have been duped may I suggest you re-evaluate your sources on this subject and read what the the scientist who publish in the field say themselves.

global warming is real, but its not a problem. the earth has had an average temperature almost 15 degrees farenheit warmer at one point in time since life showed up on earth. there is a natural cycle of increasing alternating extremes up to an ice age followed by a set of decreasing extremes. i don’t want to sound like a jerk or a know-it-all but i really wish people would educate themselves a little before they freak out about things they don’t fully understand.

Josh are you an idiot? GE is a leftwing liberal company?! You do realize they’re one of the biggest defense contracting companies right? Check your facts before you flap your gums.
Once you’re either qualified to make the judgment of climate change being a fact (e.g. a climatology degree) or at the very least make valid arguments you’ll have a leg to stand on, as of right now I picture you as a parrot standing on Rush Limbaugh’s shoulder regurgitating punditry.

We can say all sorts of things when we don’t have to identify ourselves. Also, I do believe that global warming is a bunch of crap. I think that pollution and what we are doing to our environment is devastating. Global Warming is just a fancy name to get our attention. It’s pollution that we should be talking about. The “warming” they are speaking of, is just part of the cycle our earth goes through. We should all be worried about pollution and the part we play. Don’t worry about the propaganda of……

Agreed,
Global Warming, just like BK’s food, is a bunch of fake, processed meat for you to buy.
And yes, it was created and perpetuated by the likes of Gore and others. The Earth goes through tons of cycles and climates. The equator used to be near England. “Global Warming” is not human caused (imo.) HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean humans aren’t really screwing up the Earth.
We desperately need to change our ways in order to keep on living on this world.
So, is ‘going green’ good? Yeah, of course. (when done right and reasonable.)
But is global warming the reason why we should? No.

There is a need to wake up all those people who don’t believe in global warming… If you and corps like BK don’t wake up early on this matter, gennext will have to pay a hefty price as some of the other inhabitants of earth have already paid for our prolong neglect to such an important issue….

So, its great to see that people can come together and discuss beliefs and all… But many of you may consider taking a short grammer and/ or typing class prior to your next date with your keyboard. I mean, you all want to be critics for eachother, but I see more errors on here than when I proofread my 6th grade sisters reading papers. I mean, come on, if you want to point out everyones mistakes and stupidity, rid yourself of it first. How can you expect to be taken seriously if you seem less educated than a junior high student? Just a thought.

@ Zack,

You have just committed the genetic fallacy of reasoning. Just because climate has changed in the past from one reason, does not mean that it precludes changing for another cause.

i don’t want to sound like a jerk or a know-it-all but i really wish people would educate themselves a little before they freak out about things they don’t fully understand.

The planet goes on but not necessarily with the humun race on board. We should worry. Government miss information to play down global warming is partly to blame. Good job the internet exists so people can be more informed.

@ Trent,
you are right about there being a multitude of reasons. but the climate did not change in the “past”. there are no set of rules, no baseline to shoot for, just what we’ve experienced thus far for us to go off of. climate is a fluid system with several variables and at present we appear to have simply accelerated the cycle. which i concede is a bad thing because evolution takes time hence slower is better. i just get upset when people would rather say “global warming! omg!” than actually learn about climate change and how to lessen their impact on the environment.

and greenhouse gasses are not new. they far pre-date the appearance of oxygen in the atmosphere. any thing else you would like to poke at so i can correct your misconceptions? anyone’s welcome to. zharrysun@aol.com

@Zak,

but the climate did not change in the “past.

I am sorry but that is clearly wrong. The science of paleoclimatology has acquired a vast amount of empirical data to confirm past climate changes. Just how do you think glacial moraines appear in such places as New York and Scotland? Moraine Fairies?

there are no set of rules,…

Yes, their are it called physics and chemistry.

no baseline to shoot for, just what we’ve experienced thus far for us to go off of just what we’ve experienced thus far for us to go off of.

The above is a fallacy of thinking called the Argument from Ignorance. Even if it was true that we had no knowledge of the how and why of past climate changes ( An utterly untrue statement.) it would not not mean we knew nothing of how climate works.

and greenhouse gasses are not new.

Straw Man argument. No one is arguing that green house gases are new. What is being asserted is that humans have increased the level of green house gases to levels that have not been seen for over 800,000 years.

any thing else you would like to poke at so i can correct your misconceptions?

You have not corrected anything. You have simply reasserted your ideological convictions with out the aid of logic or facts. Please go read what the climate community is actually saying and not what some fossil fuel industry funded propaganda site says.

@ Trent,
you should be a politician because you are very good at intentionally misunderstanding what is being said and then refuting your interpretation. or it may be that i don’t make my meaning clear enough. regardless i find it truly ironic that we mean the same thing in most cases but our attitudes and perspectives have got us debating. i’m actually a pretty green person. one tank of gas lasts three months in my vw fox which is only used for out of town trips. i bike or walk everywhere else. i greatly dislike the oil companies and propaganda published by them makes good fodder for the compost pile next to my vegetable garden.

To start off with, I’m not a fan of BK as I worked for them very briefly a few years ago and do not agree with the corner cutting in the fast food industry. There’s plenty of it, but that’s another story for another time. As far as the Global Warming issue goes, you’ll find that it’s nothing more than a politically motivated hoax. I’ve always thought it to be a hoax, but now I’m starting to believe it’s a path towards some sort of global carbon tax. I complete agree with BK’s stand on this issue, but don’t think it’s an issue a corporate food chain should be stating it’s opinions on.

Scientifically speaking, our last ice age was approximately 10,000-18,000 years ago. To us, that’s a hell of a long time ago. But when you’re talking about the broad span of this planet’s history, it really wasn’t too long ago. Technically, as far as this planet’s history is concerned, we’re just coming out of an ice age. So of course our planet is just going to get warmer. I’m convinced that everything that happens on the higher level of government (I mean above whomever they put in the public eye such as presidents and congress) is, for lack of better words, a load a bull**** with agendas far more dangerous from issues which everyone absorbs from mass media

Trent, very good reasoning, this Zakk guy really isn’t giving off any bit of a good argument.

@WSD
Just because you think that “10,000-18,000″ years was a long time ago doesn’t mean it is or that we’re just coming out of an ice age. The thing is, it’s not that the world is heating up, that’s normal for where we are at this time, but that it’s heating up too fast due to extra greenhouse gasses. No, not the introduction of greenhouse gasses, but the piling on off them. If any of you dissenters would bother to look up the data anywhere that isn’t completely biased (that also means nothing with Al Gore in it) then I think you’d find the truth of the matter. Or just keep denying, whichever.

Of course burger king is going to say global warming is “baloney” (which they spelled wrong.) They’re a fast food restaurant that serves up gobs and gobs of meat; aka: the number one contributor to environmental pollution and excess greenhouse gases.

I do NOT support burger king, nor do I eat there, but I can understand why they would make up something that stupid.
