Are you interested in the Environment, but confused by Twitter Hashtags? Who should you follow and how do you find them, in your search for #Green?
We’ve all heard of Twitter by now. The 140 character microblog platform where you can share messages with the people who follow you. But what are hashtags and how can you use them to narrow your twitter stream down to the people you’re interested in, without accidentally following people you have nothing in common with?
Well, Twilight Earth has been on Twitter since November, and I guess you could say were doing pretty well. We were recently named as Treehugger.com’s “Best of Green, Culture & Celebrity, best Tweeting Duo,” and MNN put us at the top of the list in its “Great Green Follow Parade Article.” But this isn’t how we measure our success, and maybe it’s for this reason, that we have so many people interacting with us in reference to the environment.
How do you cut through all the Star Trek fans to find the environmental news and people your interested in? Well at the end of this article we’re going to give you a list of great Green folks that we would suggest you follow. This is some pretty valuable information, as these are the best of the thousands of people that WE follow.
But first, lets talk about starting out. Like life, when you start a Twitter Account, you are alone in the world. You’re just one person surrounded by strangers. How do you make friends? Well, Twitter will give you some suggestions on people that you may be interested in following, but they are more than likely going to be people like Britney Spears or Ashton Kutcher. Perhaps nice people, to be sure, but they may not be the ones your interested in.
So what you need to do is find people you are interested in, and follow them. Maybe someone like Shea Gunther or Wendy Gabriel. (two of our favorites) When you follow them, you’re telling them “I’m checking you out. I can read everything that you say. If they follow you back, and they more than likely will, then you have built a relationship. When they talk, you can listen and respond, and they can respond back.
There are a few different ways of building your friend list (Yeah I know, they are called “followers” but I don’t like that word. I like “friends” or “Twitter Colleagues.” One way is find out who Wendy and Shea’s friends are, and follow them. These guys are about as Green as they come, and they’ve got some great friends. If you follow them, then some of them will follow you back, but maybe some of them won’t. That’s o.k., it’s not a popularity contest.
Another way to find people your interested in, is by using that intimidating Hashtag. (or #) If you go into Twitters search feature and type in the # followed by the word Green or Environment (#Green or #Environment) then you will get a list of all the people in twitter that have used the term #Green or #Environment in there Tweets. In real time! If you like what someone is saying, you can open their profile and read all their Tweets. If you really like what they are saying, and you think that you’d like to follow them, then do it!
Before you know it, you’ve got a couple dozen or a couple hundred Twitter Colleagues that you’re interacting with, and they all have the same interests as you. You’re on your way to getting all the best Environmental information that internet has to offer.
Here’s a list of great environmentalists, writers and people who care about the environment, to get you started on your journey:
The above list covers a wide group of environmental writers, websites, advocates, educators and normal people just trying to live their lives in a more sustainable way.
But if you want to know our one best tip on how to getting involved in the Twitter community, its this:
You may have information that you would like to share, but building relationships is about sharing other peoples information more than your own. Be human, make friends, remember the friends you make, and keep on fighting the good fight!

Wonderful post! Thank you for the mention, I am honored.
I’ve recently joined Twitter as well and follow Twilight Earth and many others you recommend. And you are right – this is the most effective way to get the best environmental information on line and at your fingertips. I’m learning everyday thanks to your great tweets and from those on your list.
Great Site. I have been posting related mountain top articles and materials as well. Great work being done by all renewable energy activist. Nice website, hope to link up to your recent video to share with my world wide readers as well. green earl, founder

Great article Adam! I’m working on some green hashtags to promote individual green acts that people perform everyday.
Thinks like:
#gract-rb = Using a cloth shopping bag instead of a plastic one
#gract-wb = Using a water bottle instead of a buying a disposable plastic one
#gract-ll = Putting the laundry on the line to dry
#gract-xx = Random acts of Green-ness
#gract = Any comment or discussion topic related to individual green acts
I am collecting statistics about the use of these hashtags over at Gracts.com I’m hoping that the statistics and the peer influence will encourage folks to do more little things everyday to help our planet stay green.
Keep up the good work!

Adam,
Great piece though you didn’t include @mcmilker- I’m hurt (JK)
A key point is the power of networking within the green Twittersphere means your follower list can grow very rapidly!
Great list! I’ll go thru and make sure I’m following all of ‘em, many of them I’m already a big fan of…including you all.
@elephantjournal is yours truly, if you want to follow.
@VaStateParks for green travel, to enjoy nature, and for programs and events including environmental stewardship themes.
OK – Doing what you’ve just tweeted to do –

Thanks!

Great post Adam and team. If I may be so bold, I’d like to throw @timwirtz and @MarlainaQ in the #green mix. Tweet you all soon.
Thanks for the list! I follow some on your list, but I’ll check out others when I have a few minutes. I, for one, always forget to use hashtags. I’m @SmallbonesShop and I make 100% natural & sustainable products for your body & your home.
Thank you very much for taking the time to cultivate a perfect size list of voices focused on green issues – yesterday’s frenzy of @ follow suggestions definitely had this brand new tweeter scratching her head.
There isn’t by any chance a similar list/resource for those of us in search of tweeters focused on the small business side of the green movement equation. I sometimes worry that a subtle-today but dangerous-tomorrow disconnect is beginning to develop between ‘regular’ business owners like myself (who make up 98% of all american businesses according to GreenBiz.com’s wonderful green small biz section) and the people charged with communicating the benefits and viability of LEED/energy efficient new construction.
With the vast majority of examples covered/cited by press being either public institutions like libraries and schools or very large private corps/institutions/universities like Adobe’s triple platnium or RPI’s new Athletic facility, I’m beginning to notice previously excited owners change their tunes (eg. “only big businesses are doing it which means only big biz can afford it…”) just when the opposite is becoming more and more true with each new day/innovation.
Perhaps these questions are a bit too serious for inclusion within my comment on your wonderfully helpful article? If so, apologies in advance. It was on my mind before I sat down to type and your’s seemed like the kind of forum where people would enjoy a (hopefully) meaningful tangent
Thanks again for sharing this list of voices.
Thanks for generating this list. One suggestion: While it’s great to share information within the green community and be connected to people with similar passions, it’s also worth following/engaging people who share different POVs. I like to know what others I may disagree with are saying (such as folks in the fossil fuel, corn ethanol or nuclear industries, for example).
Best, @mrcleantech
@birdsofafeather
Thanks for all you do! Have enjoyed your posts. I’ve been involved in sustainability issues for communications designers for over 3 years and it’s great to see the dialogue in the branding industry — AIGA’s Center for Sustainable Design http://sustainability.aiga.org/ and http://www.sustainablelifemedia.com/ are great resources. Of great concern to me as well is living in a world free of toxins. Since the industrial revolution we produce more chemicals than ever before, most of which are not regulated due to a grandfather clause. What legacy are we leaving behind? http://www.healthychildhealthyworld.com/ is spreading the good word and I also recommend the book, Anti Cancer by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber as a great resource for issues that go even beyond cancer (protect your cells from the inside out).
Great list – love to be on it
@plainviewhomes
Thanks for this robust list of green tweeters, Adam! I’m a full-time writer, and I’m especially passionate about environmental issues, sustainable design, good food, organic gardening and healthy living. I’m also a big fan of your blog and tweets.
My occasional blog, Urban Homesteader, is about one regular suburban family’s attempts to live more sustainably.

One of the best Twitter/Environmental articles I have read! Great suggestions for getting past the Star Trek fans (and all those annoying marketers). You know me as @stephhicks.

Good article, would also add @Sierra_Magazine & @LCVoters
But what if you like a little sci-fi with your green tweets!? Who says you can’t have both?
I kid of course, I did lose a few folks the night of the Battlestar Gallactica finale when it was an all out nerdcore night on #bsg… but to be fair I do call myself a ‘farm nerd’ for a very good reason!
Great list – most of these folks I follow now, but there’s a few new ones in there. Excellent!
Thank you!

Great list. There are so many great people on twitter that it’s really hard to try to find them all, or even just a lot of them! Hashtags are a bit intimidating and I rarely remember to use them, but it might be worth the effort.
@clementinenw
I’m both honored and flattered by the mention, Adam.
This is a wonderful post, certainly it covers a topic I’ve long been fascinated by. Who to follow – who not to follow – why people follow us – why we follow them…and so much more.
A few thoughts…
I’ve discovered some remarkable people – and developed wonderful friendships – through Twitter. And the kicker – the common denominator, if you will – is that none of them share the same career as me.
That, more than anything, is very cool.
Also, and this is truly fascinating: There are so many on Twitter forever going the extra mile(s) to help promote something associated with someone. A friend’s book, a post, a website, in my case a radio program…and 100% of the time (at least by my experience), it’s completely genuine. The spirit of giving, genuinely reaching out to people, seems alive and well on Twitter.
For all the folks who seem to revel in ripping Twitter, they should put their misguided energy to better use. Maybe turn it around and actually reach out to people rather than trying to suck the life out of them.
Adam, you more than just about anyone, are superemly gracious to your friends. It’s something that is never lost on me and many others. When those supposedly in the know wrote the alleged “rules” of Twitter, they forgot to include The Adam Factor. And The Adam Factor seems to lead with this: Give to others, first. And second. And third.
Admirable, indeed. But for those who don’t know you, I’m more than a little happy to say it’s not for that reason I consider you such a good friend. I realize I’m straying a bit, but I really don’t care.
I just wanted to mention that when people are looking for high-quality individuals, you’re a damn good place to begin.
CG,
You flatter me. Thank you my friend.
Thank you for this list! We also recommend the following for Green Patriot Radio and Healthy Living magazine:

Everone mentioned by Adam and who has commented here have a common purpose. A sustainable planet asap.
Hashtags, twibes, twubbs etc bring us closer together but it still seems to me that often we are all just out there pushing our own agendas and not really working as a team.
I run social media marketing campaigns with teams and maybe am the first to be doing this.We did one for Earth Day and are now working on 24 October #350ppm Climate Change awareness day, a Stop Plastic Bags Day and also a tree planting (insyead of tree cutting) campaign for Christmas. Among other things including promoting and marketing new cleantechnology products from Japan.
