AQUS: Innovative Greywater Recycling System Conserves Freshwater Resources

aqus480 AQUS: Innovative Greywater Recycling System Conserves Freshwater Resources

Peak water may ultimately affect us more than peak oil. We can find energy sources that aren’t petroleum based, but we can’t find a substitute for water.

Our American attitude toward water is one of abundance and thoughtlessness, as all we have to do is turn on the tap for a virtually limitless supply. The price is ridiculously cheap – somewhere around $7 per 1000 gallons – and I imagine that most of what we consider ‘use’ is more likely to be wasted. Here in Northern Colorado, residential use is something like 2 or 3 % (agriculture is the biggest consumer), so while household water use is a tiny amount compared to institutional and commercial use, it’s important enough to us to conserve it whenever we can.

Every drop counts.

One method of water conservation for homeowners is to start looking at recycling your greywater. One company, AQUS, has come up with an innovative greywater recycling system that’s virtually hidden in your bathroom. AQUS claims savings of 10 to 20 gallons a day (per two-person household) with its device, which adds up to somewhere in the range of 3600 to 7300 gallons per year.

The AQUS is a small scale greywater recycling system that uses treated water that is captured from the bathroom sink to flush the toilet – and accomplish greywater recycling in the process.

The system consists of two parts; 1) the Fill Control Unit and 2) the Vanity Tank. The Fill Control Unit effectively clips onto the back of the customer’s toilet and holds the fill valve up, in the off position, which allows the Vanity Tank located under the bathroom sink to fill the tank with treated and recycled sink water. The system does not shut off the fresh water supply or cross connect to it. It simply holds the fresh water “OFF” until it is needed to supplement the toilet fill.

The system is not presently compatible with dual flush toilets or one piece toilets.

For more information, contact WaterSaver Technologies through their website, or check your local plumbing supply store to find out if they carry or install the system.

Hm, very interesting. Wonder with what the water is treated, as we are on a septic system. Also, thinking what a nice water-saving combo this would make with our low-flo toilets.

Looks like a great system. California especially needs this type of innovation to cope with the drought that will undoubtedly cause water rationing this year. I do wonder what is in those tablets that treat the water. I could not find any place where they explain what chemistry is involved. We already save a lot of water for use on plants by using buckets. This looks a lot easier, and more effective. Sometime this week I will link to your post.

From what I understand, the key component for a viable greywater system is using a soap that breaks down into plant nutrients without a complex system for treatment. I believe that Oasis soaps are biocompatible.

I’m more likely to build my own system than to buy one for my house, but for those who want a ‘hidden’ watersaver, these kinds of systems (AQUS) would be super.

This would be especially cool for city dwellers, eh?? Coolness. I’m working on diverting my bathwater to irrigate trees.
