Within five months of suing to keep polar bears off the U.S. threatened species list, Governor Sarah Palin announced that Alaska has filed a notice of intent to file a lawsuit to challenge the federal government’s decision to list the beluga whales in Cook Inlet as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
“Once again Governor Palin has demonstrated either a complete lack of understanding or lack of concern over the plight of endangered species.” – Brendan Cummings, Center for Biological Diversity
The State of Alaska fears that protected status for beluga whales and polar bears will hurt fisheries, tourism, and oil and gas exploration, and believes the population of belugas has stabilized and is recovering. Cook Inlet is the most populated and fastest growing watershed in Alaska, and with significant proposed offshore oil and gas development in beluga habitat, the area could seriously impact recovery for the whales.
Less than 400 of these graceful animals are left in Cook Inlet, an oil-producing basin home to producers like Unocal, Marathon Oil, ConocoPhillips and Chevron. In October, the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the Cook Inlet beluga whale population near Anchorage is in danger of extinction, and has been listed as an endangered species. The proposed Knik Arm Bridge, a billion-dollar boondoggle, will also directly impact some of the beluga’s most important habitat.
The move by Alaska’s government to challenge the decision is coming under fire from environmental groups, who say the beluga is still not recovering from a population loss of two-thirds over the last 30 years.

This is sad. Once again, we have managed to exploit other species for the sake of our own race. It makes sense to some degree, to have a responsibility to our own, except that we will inevitably hurt our own in the process.

You cannot be against protecting the natural elements of your state and for drilling. It’s impossible. Therefore, she must be on the payroll of the oil companies.
What Sarah Palin and others like her don’t understand about wildlife protection is that it is not enough to merely have enough of a species around to reproduce — there must also be sufficient genetic diversity available to cope with genetic problems.
If you reduce a species below a certain threshold number, you induce inbreeding. You can doom a species to eventual extinction merely by reducing their numbers sufficiently. It is not necessary to kill them all directly.
400 members of an area is already too few, and the population is already at serious risk of extinction. Sarah Palin means well, but her actions cause harm, and her worst offense is her ignorance basic genetic principles.

There is no scientific evidence that the whales and polar bears are not endangered. If there was Palin would be touting it as much as she could. It’s a shame that there isn’t a policy to cut back on oil exploration in favour of renewables which would have several long term benefits not least of which is the fact that they will last; unlike the oil. Oil only makes the problem worse in the shorter and longer terms and when it runs out the Alaskans will have to find another way to get rich. What will they do then? What we should all do now is invest in renewables – those that lead the way will get rich and there’s the bonus that we leave the polar bear and the ice caps alone into the bargain.
The frightening thing is that Sarah Palin’s apparent contempt for the environment is shared by a disturbingly large share of voters. It seems more right-wingers preferred Palin to McCain (whom they scorned as ‘too liberal’) during the election, precisely because of her clueless drivel.
