Action Day Saturday-Secretary of State for Climate Change Calls For Eco Activists and Agitators

polar bear protestor Action Day Saturday Secretary of State for Climate Change Calls For Eco Activists and Agitators

Secretary of State for Climate Change, Ed Miliband, was recently quoted as saying “The scale of the popular movement and the force with which activists and agitators deliver their arguments is key to the success of any future international agreement to tackle climate change.

Thanks for visiting Twilight Earth for your Saturday Action Day Green News.

These are strong words, from someone whom you would think would be on the “Non-confrontational” side of the eisle, but these are strange times. Even Al Gore was quoted as sayingIf you’re a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration,”

While speaking at the Environment Agency conference this week, Ed Miliband went on to say that “We need the utopians and we need the agitators. We need the people who say that people like me aren’t doing enough. It is vital for activists to form global networks that would help give their message more weight. This can’t be done by government alone, it needs a popular movement to make this happen. That movement needs to do more to find its international voice.”

He continued his speech by saying “The most important thing of all is that people can say of us in decades to come ‘these people saw the scale of the challenge, they saw the threat that was posed by climate change and despite tough times they did act and they did make a difference to ensure we met our obligations to future generations.”

What is the world coming to when even the Politicians are asking people to speak out and against even themselves? I think that we are coming into a world where even the politicians realize that they can’t make change by themselves, and that change needs to start from the ground up, just like all lasting change, always has.

Were coming into a world where it’s o.k. to care about the environment, where its o.k. to look around and say “I don’t want to live my life like a lemming. I refuse to be a sheep. I refuse to over-consume. It’s o.k. for me to want a better world, and damn it if I’m not going to try to make a positive change!

As always, keep up the good fight and Alter the Eco!

Post Script: My condolences go out to the families of the Walmart Employee who was killed and the woman who lost her unborn baby in the Black Friday Stampede, to consumer crazed Black Friday pigs.

Hello again Adam, I agree I want to make a difference and our writings are part of doing something, but I am affraid, there will have to be more done. Really getting involved. We have to get the word out to groups and work with people who really love our planet and the wonderful life that our planet gives to us.

Have you been watching the Whale Wars on Animal Planet? I do not completely agree with the folks in their techniques to stop Japan from KILLING the whales, but where is the U.S. and the EU in this battle? At least the people involved in stopping Japan is really doing something and are willing to risk their lives. Why can’t the politicans have enough guts to standup and say to Japan, STOP KILLING THE WHALES AND CUTTING THE FINS OFF OF SHARKS!!
Adam, appreciate your posts and we need to get active (involved) and not be a spectator. We will discuss this in length next week if you have time. There has to be a starting point and then get folks who care to band together and make some noise. The wheel that squeaks the loudest gets the grease.
There was an article out yesterday about the global warming movement is loosing steam. Part of this is due to economic conditions and I believe the way the politicans have just screwed up a lot because of their greed and not being fully committed to the Green Cause.
Have a nice weekend and until we can talk, thanks for your great blog.
Until later,
Steve Mason

Steve,

Your right, we have to get the word out, but I often wonder if getting the word out is enough. Sometimes I think it is not, and I feel bad about that because I think I should be doing more.

Were in such a mess that I think that just “knowing” without “doing” is not going to help this planet. It seems to me that that Environmental destruction can be broken down into two catagories.
1. The impact personal impact we have on the environment as individuals based on our lifestyles and
2. The impact that governments and corporations have on the environment based on our life styles.

Information exchangers (like you and I) often think that by changing individual lifestyle choices, and trying to get others to do the same, will effect the overall problem, and to some degree, this is correct. But Is this enough? Can we reach enough people this way to really influence change? At what point do realize that there needs to be more done? At what point do we become “activists?”

Yes, I have been watching “Whale Wars.” Like you, I find that some of the tactics that the Sea Shepherds use are a bit on the dicey side. The crew is not trained in these types of water operations, and it seems as if some of them have never even been on the water before. They are a bunch of well meaning college kids willing to put their lives on the line for something that they believe in, and I respect them for that.

Everyone has their own agenda, even you and I. Theirs is keeping whales from being killed. Because their agenda is so spot specific, they are successful at it. But with an issue as big as “The Environment” its damn hard, if not impossible, to see the change that you are trying to be.

You have started an interesting thought process going in my head. I’m going to let it simmer and may write an article about this new Green Fatigue concept, what causes it, how it can be overcome, what is the natural progression from Green Orator to Activist…..

Will speak to you Monday Steve,

Adam

Caution: Do not confuse motivational literature with operating instructions.

Agitation does not achieve implementation.

@Mike Licht: No, agitation disturbs the equlibrium and provides people with an opportunity to break free. Only then can we achieve implementation of a new paradigm. Without agitation we are doomed to suffer in silience.
