If you read Environmental news like I do, you may be surprised to see the number of news outlets saying that 2008 is the coldest in 10 years. What you’ll have a harder time finding is the fact that it is also the 9th warmest year on record.
Don’t you love the way that News Agencies Wag the Dog? They will spin it any way they can, to get you past the headline and into the website.
Take a look at some of these headlines,

The Mail Online article opens with this:
This year is on track to be the coolest since the start of the millennium, according to figures released yesterday.
In a preliminary report, the Met Office said the global average temperature for the past 11 months was 14.3c, the lowest since 1999.
At least they get credit for this, in the third paragraph:
But climate scientists stressed that the dip in temperatures does not mean global warming has stopped – and that 2008 will also be the tenth warmest year since records began in 1850.
What you really have to dig for, is an article like this one:

Nasa Reported on Tuesday that 2008 was the Ninth warmest year since 1880 and all nine warmest years have occurred in the past 11 years. It reported that Jan to Nov, the global temperature was 0.76 degrees F above the average for the 20th Century.
The disturbing truth to the Media Spin is that even though the Media is correct, it gives the impression that Global Warming is trending toward lower temperatures, and gives Climate Skeptics and Deniers more fodder for their incorrect hypothesis and science magic.
Or am I just seeing this thing the way I am, instead of the way IT is?

I’m not nearly as up on climate change/global warming as I should be considering what I do, but I do know this. Here in NJ, it was definitely cooler this past summer than it’s been in a long time.
I don’t think that means all is well. It’s kind of eerie actually.
Interesting phenomena how media “manipulates” with the data. The fact is that media creates the public opinion. Maybe in this case it is actually good. Why? Because we all create our own reality, and if people will start thinking “oh, things are getting better”, then it will in fact get better.

I’m reading a book called “Hot, Flat and Crowded” and the author talks about changing the term from “Global Warming” to “Global Wierding.”
It is eerie, with all the desertification in some areas and flooding in others, total global warming and localized cooling. It’s confusing and hard to wrap your head around, but I think that most people only look as far as their eyesight or personal experience can take them. That’s why when one area gets an abnormal high amount of snow or cold people think “pishaaww, Global Warming is false” what they dont really understand is that Global Warming or “Weirding” is GLOBAL. Its Planetary and it encompasses thousands or millions of years!
I do know what you mean though, it was cooler in in NJ this summer, but just down the street in VA, we had over 30 90 degree days and was the hottest year on record. Were not talking continents away, were talking a 3 or 4 hour drive.

Yes it is confusing. I think this recent news originated with the World Meteorological Organization announcing that 2008 will be the coolest since 1997 but still the tenth hottest in a temperature record dating back 150 years. It is interesting that the World Meteorological Organization press release says “warmest” whereas the Scientific American article based on that press release chooses to use “coolest”.
Thanks for bringing this issue up – confusion in spreading the message about what’s really happening to our planet just makes decision-making all that more difficult.

The media has been the exact opposite for the last ten years with the doom and gloom, “how dare you drive your SUV” attitude because it catches your attention. That’s what sells, retards. You bought it, congrats . Now some good news and you guys are pissed. Awesome. Environmental sheep. You guys feel more comfortable with news that mankind is killing our world, rather than news that things would be alright. You sit on your pedestal next to your hybrids and smart cars pompously conversating about a false superiority. Smart cars get the same mileage as a Corolla, only seats two, and has zero trunk space. Thats smart.
For what ever reason we live in a society where people are deathly afraid of being wrong. This is backwards. When your wrong about something it should be calibrated because you have learned something new. You have advanced your knowledge. The cause of this is ego and we must ride it off our world, dammit.
So lets do it together starting with this topic. It sucks that our politicians have raped the idea of global warming to increase funding and general fear throughout the public. But the truth is that “Global Warming” is theory with very little evidence and a powerful political tool.

The planet has naturally heated and cooled and reheated itself continuously throughout its time. The climate is always changing! This “ man-made global warming issue” is a fraud generated by the government with the interests of raising taxes, setting restrictions and rules on every day life. Who benefits from “saving the environment by stopping Global Warming? Who’s getting millions and millions of dollars from the world buying this propaganda? The increase in carbon dioxide is simply caused by the sun, not us! The government gets more money and the media gets a story. So who are these scientists that are claiming this man-made climate change? Not Climatologists. Physicists and Marine Biologists. Um, great.
Unless the earth completely melts or freezes, there is no way to support this theory, so everyone will always be debating. Why not focus on issues that are more important. Like, let’s say world hunger and poverty. Why not help those in need instead of wasting your time making people feel guilty for LIVING. It must be satisfying for your ego to sit and type away on how we’re all horrible people for not recycling or driving SUV’s (which by the way, have better gas mileage these days and pretty close to the gas mileage of a sedan). Really? Is this how you’re doing your part in changing the world by bringing awareness to a hoax? Let’s all jump on the bandwagon and buy Prius’s to show how I am a better person than all of you. We drive cars that are causing world suffering? Should I feel guilty for emitting carbon dioxide by breathing? There is nothing wrong with taking care of your environment, keeping it clean and all that. Fact is, we’re ALL parasites. We are living creatures that consume our resources and are wasteful, it’s inevitable. Should I reuse my q-tips, skip showers; maybe use old newspaper to blow my nose? Why should anyone feel guilty for living? Why should you make this into a political platform?
Tree rings, coral reefs, and ice cores help prove that the earth has experienced vast climate changes throughout its history. Look it up! In fact, instead of being so closed-minded, have you taken the time to research the probability of why this is all false?
So you say there’s a hole in our ozone layer? The ozone layer has different reactions with solar radiation and breaks down and covers up again. The ozone is made of oxygen and is very unstable, and that is it’s own nature, and not caused by us. Did you also forget on how the earth circles and spins and even wobbles a little around the sun? Sometimes the earth spins closer, and this is why we have warmer climates.
Ultimately, I hope you do more research on your part before labeling people and playing the blame game. Know the REAL facts first, it’s enlightening.
Global warming was a fact. Global cooling is also a fact. We are in the middle of a natural cycle, not something made up by anyone with the possible exception of God. The earth has been cooling for the last seven years from a high temperture not seen in a thousand years so naturally it is possible to argue that 2008 was BOTH a warmest and coolest on record! The only really decisive easily identifiable natural phenomenon that we can point to are the sunspots. The three sunspot cycles during the global warming period were some of the most intense in the last hundred years. The current sunspot cycle is almost nonexistent, mirroring the lack of sunspots during the Dalton Minimum of the 19th century. According to the historical record when there is a lack of sunspots the temperature of the earth cools. That is apparently what is happening today.
