The first Mammal is extinct, as a result of our over-consumption and recklessness. The White lemuroid possum (see photo above) is forever gone.
The White lemuroid possum is a native of Queensland’s Daintree forest. It was normally only found above 1000 meters in the mountain forests, and has not been seen for over three years.
Scientists believe some frog, bug and insects species have also been killed off by climate change. But this would be the first known loss of a mammal and the most significant since the extinction of the Dodo and the Tasmanian Tiger.
Professor Williams, director of the Centre for Tropical Biodiversity and Climate Change at James Cook University, said “It only takes four or five hours of temperatures above 30C to kill this highly vulnerable species. They live off the moisture in the trees in the cooler, high-altitude cloud forests and, under extreme heat, they are unable to maintain their body temperature.”
You may be saying “So what, it’s only a possum.” This is true, but more than being just a possum, or more than being the first Mammal who has become extinct, it is a harbinger of things to come. It is a milestone, a crossing point, a moment in time that can never be taken back.
More than anything, it is a shot, resounding through the still night, that must turn our attentions in a new direction. From this point forward, we will not be fighting for what we could lose, instead, we will be fighting for what the world has left.
I’ll say it once again. It’s not about saving the earth, it’s about saving ourselves. How soon will the day come, when the first humans die as a direct result of Man Made Global Warming? My guess is that they already have.
Keep up the good fight. Alter the Eco.

I wouldn’t worry. They’ve only spent 20 hours in three years looking for it. That’s less than 7 hours a year. Not exactly thorough.
Much as that picture of that little rat thing up there gives me the heebie jeebies, I don’t want its kind gone. I always approach environmentalism not just from the angle that we’re ruining the earth for future generations but also from a belief that humans have been given the responsibility to care for all that was created. We’re not holding up our end of the deal.
Robin,
Absolutely concur.
A lot of people use the biblical “Dominion over the Earth” argument. But I would say that God would have us throw in a healthy dose of Stewardship, along with that dominion.
Thanks for the comment!

I hate to be a party-pooper,but not seeing this animal does not prove it is extinct. There are thousands of species we have never seen, but that exist. Don’t even get me started on the “man-made” global warming part.
This post is brimming with eagerness to validate the AGW myth. Come on people, because Timber Jim reports not seeing a possum (which i believe is a nocturnal animal, yes?) hardly means it is extinct.
And if the population really did died off because of climate change, well then it’s the same culprit that also killed off the wooly mammoth, the saber toothed tiger and on and on. Did you know long before the 20th century, England used to be warm enough to grow grapes? Greenland used to be green? The climate changes on it’s own.
and man is not evil.
The climate changes people, this AGW hysteria piggy backed on pictures of cute animals is nothing more than a means to villify capitalism and force socialism and wealth redistribution down everybodies throats.
Talk about religious zealotry! To some people, no amount of scientific FACT trumps those cute little animal pictures. Give people a reason to hate the human race and be amazed at the number of people ready to take up arms.
Marc and Sandy,
I have a website I would like to share with you. It’s http://greenfyre.wordpress.com/ Go there, check it out, spend some time, take an unbiased look and then come back and tell me how Global Warming is a hoax.
I find it interesting that skeptics and deniers tend to troll “Green” Websites, leaving their comments that are so easily refutable.
But were all adults here, and there is no reason to get spun up, so I’ll just add that the is no religious zealotry going on here, and where did you get the idea that I am advocating Wealth Redistribution? You’ve either got me mixed up with someone else, or you have your own agenda that your spreading. If the latter is the case, then I suggest that you get your own website so that you expound uninterpreted.
Thanks for the comments though, always fun!
Thanks for the response adam! I mean no disrespect with the sarcasm and such – just trying to grab your goat
But now, calling people who call your facts into question climate ‘deniers’ – invoking the intellectual equivalent of holocost deniers – is typical OF eco-vangalist group-think
Now, I welcome open debate on the subject, and hope you don’t mind me voicing my view here on your blog. BTW, I found my way here via an article I read on the Reuters web site.
But what I’d like to know is what fact did I state that was so easily refutable? I pretty much stated only 2 related to climate change in the past resulting in extinction. The rest was opinon:
– Hundreds of years ago, England was much warmer and used to have a climate friendly to grape cultivation
– Climate change related to the Ice age, when saber tooth tigers and mamoths roamed… california. (Ever been to the la brea tar pits in los angeles?)
The point is, if the climate is the cause of a species going extinct… well then the climate is the cause of a species going extinct! Putting man as the guilty party is so far lacking in supporting evidence. And your post does not make an attempt to justify what you and many readers already assume to be irrefutible: that man is the cause.
So I would ask you to respond to one additional known fact: that since 1998 ( the hottest year on record) the last ten years have shown a cooling trend. Are you aware that the temperature data used in the UN report on climate change – the data that showed that the average temperature was continuing to rise after 1998 – was based on incorrect data due to an error when compiling the temperature records? And this error was not corrected until after the report was submitted?
Maybe global warming really is ‘man-made’!
As for the the wealth redistribution comment: that is simply a fact. What else do you call burdening successfull western economies with taxes and regulation, slowing their growth and consumption of fuel, referring (not you specically) to greedy americans with their “SUVs and their excessive consumption…”, carbon credits and all the rest. It certainly isn’t a capitalistic message! On the contrary the loudest voices for AWG activism *undeniably* come from persons and groups on the political left: Sierra club, Green party and on and on and on.
Please, refute those facts, because the link to the website you mentioned in your response did not. The only thing that stood out was the “Deniers” in 76pt font! :p
I question the excessive attention that climate change has received. And I doubt the validity of the article’s main claim regarding climate change as the reason for this possum’s extinction. Considering the intellect of your argument, I was however surprised when I read your comment regarding consumption and growth in the US.
Marc, The ecological footprint of the average American is not sustainable. Neither is the average Canadian’s. These ARE irrefutable facts. If the rest of the world were to ‘grow’ like Americans the situation would be worse. There are simply not enough resources to go around, and not just fossil fuels.
Btw, take an unbiased look at this article, which talks about the temperature data that i talked about, complete with references

Peace
Marc – you mean the successful US economy? Where banks are auguring in left and right, inflation is running wild, unemployment is spiraling upwards, and a state like Arizona is slashing the education budget so much that we can no longer afford to educate children (and this is at the hands of Republicans, I might note.)
Global Warming is real. We see the effects of it every day. Weather systems are changing, ecosystems are falling apart, species are threatened. Our rapaciousness as a species is killing *us* never mind other species on the planet. Even without Global Warming, we’re on a path to suicide, and all many can think of is how to accumulate more false wealth (it’s phantom, for the most part; as has been demonstrated recent, repeatedly, all that stands between the illusion of wealth and the poverty line is an electronic tick.)
If there was a God, do you think she’d been pleased with the way humans have screwed up Her creation? All those Fundie types expecting to be raptured up to God’s side would likely be in for a rude awakening.
Is everybody retarded? This is obviously not the first mammal to go extinct. Sometimes I wonder how many people out there actually believe the shit they read on the internet. Yes the animal is extinct, that is very unfortunate, but lets not blow this completely out of proportion. Extinction is a natural process of evolution. Some species survive, others die out. This has been happening for hundreds of millions of years.
Maybe you didn’t read the last six words in the title of the article? “Due to Man Made Global Warming.” I can see how confusing it can be. “It’s happened – First Mammal Extinction” is what you read, yeah? Here it is again. “It’s Happened – First Mammal Extinction Due To Man Made Global Warming”
I would be really interested in knowing the exact effects of its loss on the particular ecosystem…
