Good News Monday – Positive Green News Stories From Around the World

In what shall forever be known as “Good News Monday”, Twilight Earth is committing to giving you nothing but Good Green News on Mondays.

There has been a lot written lately about “Green Fatigue“, and there is enough doom and gloom when it comes to our Environment. So instead of concentrating on what is wrong with the world (there is plenty of that) lets celebrate Mondays with Good News.  So here we go, round 1.

1. More than 195,000 wind turbines to appear outside homes by 2020. According to the UK Telegraph, “More than 195,000 wind turbines will spring up outside homes across Britain over the next 12 years, according to energy advisers, after the Government pledged to pay people for generating their own electricity.”

Adam:  I am going to be looking into this. Does anyone out there own a personal wind turbine?

2. 10,000 jobs to be created by insulating homes. In other good Euro news, the UK Guardian reports that “A plan to create more than 10,000 jobs in the construction industry by insulating homes in the private and public sectors will be announced by Alistair Darling in today’s pre-budget report.”

Adam: Always good for the Environment. My home inspector said that I should probably put anouther 4 inches of insulation down in my attic. I’m hearing that blown insulation is actually better for the environment and cheaper than buying it in rolls.

3. In a first development, scientists from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) report that they have found a way to “waterproof” versions of popular varieties of rice, which can withstand 2 weeks of complete submergence. This can double crop output and can save millions of tons of rice from losses, which is enough to feed tens of millions of people.

5. Sixty-nine percent of those polled in 21 countries say utility firms should be obliged to use more renewable resources, even if this would increase their monthly bills. A wide majority of the world’s citizens are unhappy with the slow pace of their governments’ moves toward renewable energy and want their leaders to do more, even if that raises their utility bills, according to a global opinion poll released today.

Adam: Would you pay more for power from renewable resources?

6. Sea eagles could be reintroduced. Conservationists are planning to bring the sea eagle, the UK’s largest bird of prey, back to the skies above England. The bird, known as “flying barn doors” because of its size, could be reintroduced into Norfolk next summer if the scheme gets the go-ahead.
