Thanks for visiting. This weeks Photo Sunday section has pictures of Haystack Rock, on the Oregon Coast. All pictures are clickable.

Low tide at the cliff face

Low tide at the cliff face

We were lucky in that it was low tide, and walking out on the algae covered rocks presented a whole world of crustacean sea creatures.

I like this on a lot. Check out the Barnacles on the interior walls.

Getting up here requires a long slog up a sand dune, but the tip is beautiful.

Water crashing on the rocks at the cliff bottom

Fortunately I’m not afraid of heights, so I was able to get this shot, over the edge.

The rock is smooth where the water rushes over it at high tide.

My son lives in Portland, and while out to visit him, we drove out to Oregon City. If you’ve never been there, its well worth the trip. The drive through the forests and hills is really breathtaking.

I hope you enjoyed the photo’s, and we’ll see you next Sunday with Pics of the Potomac and Potomac bays, taken while Kayaking.

You must have wasted a lot of fossil fuel to travel from VA to Oregon. More fuel than many thrid world-ers use in an entire month – maybe a year, eh?

Yeah, it was a lot of fuel. Good thing I bought carbon offsets to cover it. We can have that “Carbon Offset” discussion too if you want. What I advocate is cutting back, conserving. Doing the right thing. I’m not advocating that people stop living.

Lovely pictures. Just wanted to make a note though, that Haystack Rock is in Cannon Beach, Oregon, not Oregon City.

You have experienced one of the most photographed and beautiful areas along the Oregon Coast. Thank you for sharing your images with us. Did you know there are (2) Haystack Rocks on the Oregon Coast?

Haystack Rock that you have photographed is located in Tillamook County off of Pacific City, at Cape Kiwanda. Iexplore.com says the Pacific City rock is 318 feet, while the Cannon Beach rock is 235 feet in height. They are both wonderful places to explore photographically.

If you visit my web site you will see one of my panoramics of this same location. I waited 17 hours for the light to be right before I exposed film at 5:15am, and my tripod was planted in the ocean. Remember… God gets the credit! Best wishes to you.

Buck,

My God! That is beautiful. God may get the credit, but you my friend do a wonderful job capturing the image.

I didnt know that there are 2 Haystack Rocks. My son lives in Portland, and it was my first time out there.

Thanks for your comment, and I hope to see you around here once in a while.

It was in Pacific City, OR. Cannon beach has a haystack rock like that as well, but a smaller beach. about a 2 hour drive from Portland. Was really fun. It’s one of my favorite places in Oregon and I’m glad I could take you there.

Anthony,
Well, you are my favorite person in Oregon and I’m glad you took me there too! Driving down the coast in the convertible, top down, FREEZING! Fun! :)

I am helping my 3rd grader to check on natural rocks and came upon this. Thanks for sharing your trip with us, and your son for taking you. It’s really worth visting.
