Honey bees perform a vital function; pollination of crops, home gardens, orchards and wild habitat. As bees travel from blossom to blossom in search of nectar, they transfer pollen from plant to plant, thus fertilizing the plants and enabling them to bear fruit.
If Honey Bees die, plants don’t produce fruit. It’s that simple.
In October 2006, honeybees around the world began vanishing in enormous numbers, and more than 25% of the western Honey Bee population has disappeared over the last several winters.
Bee’s are the most important insect in relationship to the human food chain. Albert Einstein, was
supposed to have said that if the world’s bees were to perish, humanity would too within four years, due to the absence of pollinators. Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, which is the phrase that has been coined for the disappearance of bees, is a phenomenon that is real. And, according to scientists, it does have the potential of impacting honey and food production dramatically. Hence, there are a number of theories being bandied about in an effort to fathom the reason for disappearing bees. Given below are some of the disappearing bee theories that are being debated about:
Could Stress and Diet be the reason for Disappearing Bees?
In recent years, honeybees have been undergoing great stress as an increasing number of beekeepers have taken recourse to filling up huge trucks with them and crisscrossing all over the country seeking pollination work. These bees may be suffering from the effects of an unhealthy diet that includes concoctions that are similar to power bars and energy drinks, basically made up of artificial supplements. In a number of states, the spread of sprawling suburbs has severely impinged on the natural forage areas of the bees.
Some say Radiation from Mobile Phones is the Culprit for Bees Disappearing
Some researchers are of the opinion that bee populations may be adversely affected by the rise in electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere due to the increasing numbers of wireless communication towers and mobile phones. The hypothesis is that the radiation from these devices may interfere with the bees’ systems of navigation, thus hindering their ability to find their way back to their nests. Some studies found that when mobile phones were placed near their hives, bees would not come back there. Further studies are underway at present to find out to what extent bees and other insects are affected by this kind of radiation.

“Could Bees be Disappearing due to Pesticides and Genetically Modified Food?
Many think that the growing use of chemical herbicides and pesticides, which are ingested by bees when they make their daily pollination forays, are to blame greatly. Beehives that are kept for commercial purposes are also fumigated regularly with chemicals to get rid of harmful mites. Genetically modified crops, which could be producing pollen with poor nutritional value, is another suspect thought to be responsible for bees disappearing.
Perhaps a combination of both, pollen from genetically modified crops and chemicals, may have tipped the ballance.
Or is Global Warming the Reason Bees are Disappearing?
Scientists are also wondering whether global warming could be accelerating the growth rates of pathogens like fungi, viruses and mites, which are known to adversely affect bee colonies. This theory is lent credence by the fact that organically raised bees, which are not subjected to genetically modified crops and chemicals, are not undergoing the Colony Collapse Disorder that the other bees are experiencing. ”
Another affecting factor is the “Mite Blight”, caused by the Varroa destructor mite.
In an attempt to get to the truth, NRDC is suing the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to get a look at some documents that might shed light on one of the factors that many believe are part of the scary CCD equation. The EPA, apparently, has been withholding documentation that accuses pesticide company’s of contributing to CCD.
CCD has been given some media attention in the last year or so, but not nearly as much as it deserves. As a result, websites like this one, and bloggers all over the world have been putting out the information that the media isn’t. If you Google “Honey Bee Blogs” or “Colony Collapse Disorder News”, you’ll find a host of information. You can also check out websites like this one, help save the honey bees.

Some folks think that it is cell phones. That it is the frequencies. If you care about honey bees than you’d better ditch your phone.
What? Stop feel good immigration and get rid of cell phones to save the planet? No thanks! I’d rather drive my low-emission vehicle to burning man and waste polymer based condoms with recreational intercourse.
What do you reckon is the total carbon and poison byproduct from paint and paper manufacture? Think of the environmental damage we could avoid if we outlawed Art School. Sara P
I read about this awhile back. The big wig companies think GM fields are the answer to our food woes, yet here we are worse than ever before. Obviously there are many reasons the bee population is depleting, but I do feel that we are our own worst enemy no matter how you look at it.
Yes we are. Instead of investing in old worn out ideas, we need to be coming up with new ones. Vertical Farming is coming around and you can plant 50 acres of crops on one acre of ground. The initial start-up is costly, but long term benefits are to great to put a dollar value on.
When I hear things like, there are only so many farm-able acres on the planet and we cant grow enough food to feed everyone, so we have to have to use G.M to grow more, and more chemicals….. I just want to scream.
Captain,
You’re right, cell phone towers and the trace amounts of radiation that they emit, is one theory behind Colony Collapse Disorder. (Which is, in laymen’s terms, when bee’s leave hive and never come back.) Another theory is that Genetically Modified Crops and overuse of Pesticides and Chemicals like the “Terminator” that Roundup uses, are to blame.
I think it’s a number of things happening simultaneously. How “feel good immigration” and “polymer based condoms” fit into the Colony Collapse Disorder, I’m not sure.
You’re damn right I’m right. Sadly, my entire post didn’t make it onto the web.
My assertion is that people should get rid of their cell phones to find out if it is the cell phones that are causing the problem. Not using the phones would be a protest that would leave the towers inactive or maybe get them dismantled – either way we might save the bees.
I’ve done what I suggest. I have no cell phone. I invite you to do the same.
Follow my convoluted logic a little further and you’ll see that greens will not give up their cell phones. Nor will they stop traveling thousands of miles to make giant bonfires in the desert. Nor will they give up intercourse to reduce petrochemical use in condom manufacture. They won’t stop going to art school or buying recreational camping equipment and clothes made from synthetic fabric. Tents and artificial fleece are made from dinosaur bones, pumped from deep within the earth at great cost.
If the bee problem doesn’t turn out to be a quick and popular fix. If it doesn’t allow for the punishment of anonymous business interests, but instead requires that green have to give up their personal luxuries, then the bees will be toast.
Here in Australia, we are the last country in the world with a ‘clean’ bee population, and consequently we export a couple of pallets of hives each week to the US to use in your Californian orchards.
This is all well and good, but of course it’s only a matter of time before the mites arrive here and infect our bee population.
Now you’d think the Governments and scientists of the world would be clambering to investigate ways to sort this out, but no, we’ve got 1 scientist dedicated to this necessary research.
Can someone tell me how we are going to pollinate all our crops without bees, or does the Monsanto Master Plan for World Food and Crop Domination sort that out too?
Adam:
Andrew, on you’re suggestion, I saw the Monsanto documentary. Anyone who hasnt seen this yet, absolutely should. It’s Eye Opening.
A while ago, I heard an interview with Hugh Grant, Mansanto C.E.O., and even he, who’s job it is to make G.M. foods sound safe, couldn’t help but scare the hell out of me.
Thanks for you’re post Andrew. And for those who haven’t checked out Andrew’s website, please do. Its http://www.1466group.com
Adam
uhhhmmm wow
Honey bee disappearance is the very reason I started my company in Florida. It’s nice to see such intelligent discussion about our most precious resource. Thank you.
Dear Andrew the organic maven.
Quote – (Here in Australia, we are the last country in the world with a ‘clean’ bee population,) unquote.
I would not agree with your statement above. Have you heard of Africa country like Uganda? Our honeybees are still resilient to bee viruses as well. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

Lesster
