Consumerism – Chasing That American Dream!

Consumer Society

Written by Adam Shake

This seems to be the prevailing philosophy in today’s Society.

Not long ago, I wrote an ARTICLE on Affluenza, which is “An epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness caused by the pursuit of the American Dream.“   Affluenza is an extreme form of consumerism, but we all suffer from it in varying degrees. But what I really don’t like is being branded or labeled. Sure, you can call me a man, a father and a husband.  But don’t assume that because I support the environment that I’m a Democrat or because I support gun rights, that I’m a Republican.  But the one thing I don’t like, more than anything else is being branded a “Consumer.”

Sure, we have to consume to survive.  We eat.  But the term “Consumerism” has come to represent something else. From the Encarta Dictionary: Con-sum-er-sim, Noun, Definition:an attitude that values the acquisition of material goods.

When did we get to the point where our own self worth became so low, that we value ourselves based on theconsume 300x213 Consumerism Chasing That American Dream! things that we own?  Since when did “More” mean “Better?”  Well unfortunately, it’s always been that way.  But with the advent of cheap (price and quality) goods, that masquerade themselves as expensive (price and quality) goods, we have been on a shopping spree.

McMansions are a perfect example.  Per square foot, they give you great bang for the buck.  Per square foot, they are cheap (inexpensive) and as a whole, they are cheap. (Bad Quality).  But damn don’t they look good!  Especially towering over the 50 year old little brick houses in the neighborhood!

But some of us whom are secure in their self worth, don’t value the acquisition of material goods.  We don’t identify who we are by what we own, how much we own or how quickly we consume and replace it.  Some of us Boycott places like Walmart, where we could buy lots of cheap plastic made in foreign countries for super low prices.  Some of us buy quality the first time instead of junk over and over.  Some of us dont need to upgrade every time a piece of electronics becomes obsolesced.

A simple search on Google for the term Consumer, results in 364,000,000 search results. We are a society of Consumer Groups, Advocates and Businesses.  We have Consumer Markets, Products, Content, Trends, Surveys, Price index’s, Reports, Credit Counseling, Coalitions, Confidence, Laws and Digests.  We work to make money to buy things that we consume.  We get home from work and watch television, which in turn tells us consume more.

landfill 300x205 Consumerism Chasing That American Dream! We dig big holes in the ground to harvest raw materials to turn into “Consumer Goods.”  We use those consumer goods and then throw them into another big hole in the ground when were done with them, and we expect the planet to keep up.  At the same time, if we can’t consume more this year than we did last year, were not moving up or being successful. When we run out of room for our “stuff” we buy bigger houses, bigger cars, fill our basements and attics or we rent storage space to lock it away.  (We cant give it away right? Then our net worth would go down!) We destroy the environment.

Our shopping has become our habit, our hobby, our right and our compulsion. We teach our kids to be just like us, by buying them the latest game system, the best toys and dressing them in the latest fad.  We teach them that shopping is fun, and its cool to hang out at the Mall.

How do we break this cycle?  We must learn to value ourselves by who we are.  (The man, husband, father…) By what we believe in  (God, Family, Love, Friends…) By what we have in us (Trust, Integrity, Loyalty, Values, Ethics, Character, Knowledge…)

If you’re like me, you do judge people by what they own.  But perhaps not the way they would like you to.

As always, don”t forget to Alter the Eco and keep up the good fight,

Adam

Very poignant post Adam, and believe me, this disease is not limited to America – I assert all Western society has it, and lots of the developing world has it as a worthy value to aspire too as well!

Perhaps when the oil runs out, or before then when it becomes to pricey , society will realise the values that you listed, and value them once again.

By the way, I love the graphic.

Cheers

Andrew, Thank you. I believe you are correct. Unfortunately most people wont change out of moral obligation or even environmental guilt. It’s only when people get hurt financially, that they change. In the meantime, I’ll keep hoping the price of oil keeps going up.

Cheers

People in America need to realize jus what got America in this shape…cheap… yes so-call cheap items from a foreign land.

quote*Wal-Mart firmly believes in local procurement. We recognize that by purchasing quality products, we can generate more job opportunities, support local manufacturing and boost economic development. Over 95% of the merchandise in our stores in China is sourced locally. We have established partnerships with nearly 20,000 suppliers in China. *end quote!

Now! if there be 182 country’s making items for the world to buy and they have only 5% of the pie in China…duh! This company makes the nice people of China support their currency(yuan) by keeping it in their country working for the people there…. but with the yuan going up in value and the US dollar going down…all the foreign items that the American consumer buys thinking it is cheap has went up in price.

People…its all about the currency and to keep a currency strong you got to keep it floating around the country you live in so it can work for you. For the past 12 years all them US dollars are being shipped overseas to a foreign bank and with the American worker not making anything for the foreigner to buy the “we the people” have to turn to the “second” largest employer in America(Uncle Sam) to sell “we the people” debt in order to get all them dollars back!

50 years ago a foreigner would had given their left nut for a US dollar or a Hershey’s chocolate bar and today the same foreigner has got Uncle Sam and the American consumer by both all the while Hershey is moving the chocolate factory to Mexico. Wake up! America and think “MADE IN AMERICA.”

quote*”Considering that there are over 30,000 ships at sea this morning,” writes James Carlton, director of the Williams College-Mystic Seaport Maritime Studies Program, in an e-mail, “the total number of organisms and species in this global ‘bioflow’ on the morning your readers read your piece could be staggering – billions of individuals, and thousands of species.”

Indeed, scientists have long considered ballast water the primary way invasive aquatic organisms are introduced. From the zebra mussel’s arrival in the Great Lakes, to an American jellyfish severely disrupting Black Sea fisheries, the potential costs of accidental introduction of a species to new homes can be tremendous. Aquatic invasives cost the US $9 billion yearly, according to estimates by David Pimentel, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Zebra and quagga mussels (a cousin to the zebra) alone cost the $1 billion annually.*end quote!

yeap! $9 billion of hidden cost to all taxpayers for tat so-call “cheap is chic” items from a foreign land. Cheap is not what made America the powerhouse of the world… made in America did. Remember…when you buy a foreign item a person in the USA didn’t make it…put the word pride back into your towns…..shop around!

Thanks Adam. Here in Michigan I continue to be amazed, and very saddened, that the beautiful land continues to be ripped apart to build. I am STILL told that this is progress…and I am angry.

I have begun to volunteer my time and efforts to the Land Conservancy (here in west Michigan) to put my energy into a positive direction. But…I still feel frustrated and betrayed by others ideas of “progress”.

Susan,

Thanks for the comment. I grew up in West Michigan, and even in the 80’s I remember more and more of the Lake Michigan shoreline disappearing behind condo’s and strip malls.

Our consumptive “If we build it, they will come” attitude is what helped get us into this economic downturn. The answer is not to “do more of the same.” The answer is to “Renew” older structures, do more with less, conserve, re-use.

I agree with everything you said. Progress does not have to mean tearing down the old and building the new.
